Landscape painter, Water color painter

Ernst Ferdinand Oehme (23 April 1797, Dresden – 10 April 1855, Dresden) was a German Romantic painter and illustrator who specialized in moody landscapes with architectural elements.

He originally attended the Friedrichstadt teacher training college and worked as an assistant to a "Torschreiber" (a combination gate keeper and tax collector).[1] After beginning as an auto-didact, with some help from Carl Wagner, he enrolled at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts in 1819, where he studied with the Danish painter Johan Christian Clausen Dahl, who had recently settled there. He soon became acquainted with the work of Dahl's friend Caspar David Friedrich

Together with Johann August Heinrich (1794-1822), a student of Friedrich's, he became familiar with the surrounding countryside, especially Saxon Switzerland, and practiced what would later become known as plein-air painting. He had his first exhibition at the Academy in 1821 with "Cathedral in Winter", a work that shows the influence of Friedrich.

With financial assistance from Crown Prince Friedrich Augustus of Saxony, he was able to continue his studies in Italy, where he gravitated towards the German community and made lifelong friendships with Ludwig Richter, Carl Gottlieb Peschel and Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld, although the Nazarene movement had little influence on his work. Upon his return in 1825, he took a journey through the Alps, painting watercolors. Back in Dresden, he received orders from Johann Gottlob von Quandt and the Crown Prince, who had him create paintings for a "Galerie vaterländischer Landschaften" (Gallery of Patriotic Landscapes).

By the 1830s, he had begun to break away from his earlier style, painting works that were more realistic and less laden with symbolism. In the 1840s, he found an important patron in retired Major Friedrich Anton Serre [de], whose home was a significant gathering point for artists, writers and musicians. During this time, he apparently took part in amateur performances at the Societaetstheater. He became a teacher at the Blochmannsche Institute in 1842 and was appointed a court painter in 1846. Shortly thereafter, he was named an honorary member of the Academy

His son, Ernst Erwin, was also a well-known painter.

      • Ernst Ferdinand Oehme, The Mill at Eichtal
        Oct. 26, 2024

Ernst Ferdinand Oehme, The Mill at Eichtal

        Est: €40,000 - €60,000

Monogrammed and dated lower left: EO 1839 (EO ligated) A mill stands in a woodland clearing by a stream, surrounded by tall trees. A small path beside it leads further into the depths of the forest. A girl with a pitcher stands at the window of the mill and a man leading a donkey walks along the path. Both turn their backs to the painter, or rather, the viewer, and appear not to notice him as he stands by the side of the path on the bank of the stream looking at the picturesque scenery. The “The Mill at Eichtal” bears witness to Ernst Ferdinand Oehme's fascination with his local landscape, which, although it may not have offered imposing historic buildings or sublime motifs, still possessed a captivating and suggestive lyricism of its own. Oehme's depictions of nature are characterised by a subtle use of green and brown tones and the play of sunlight, here falling through the canopy of the trees to illuminate the uneven planks of the mill in yellow and ochre hues. This landscape, like others from around this time, show signs of Oehme's striving to “temper the linear style of his painting by deliberately accentuating painterly elements” (Bischoff, op. cit., p. 90). Oehme created this landscape in 1839, long after his studies under Johan Christian Dahl, his discovery of the art of Caspar David Friedrich and his journey to Italy with his friend and fellow artist Ludwig Richter. The Dresden painter's landscape style changed during this time, with the influence of the Düsseldorf school becoming visible. This time is described as the late Romantic period, in contrast to the first decades of the 19th century in Dresden, when landscape painting was primarily inspired by the works of Friedrich and Dahl. A watercolour by Oehme with an almost identical composition has survived and is presumed to be a sketch for the present work (fig. 1; Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig, inv. no. 7077). The watercolour is carried out in detail and only lacks the figures, which provide an anecdotal element in the finished work. There are also obvious changes to the general composition of the landscape. Oehme has replaced the stones by the bank of the river with green grass and increased the density of the foliage in the trees. He thus created a poetic image of a native woodland characterised by a subtle use of colour and light.

Ernst Ferdinand Oehme, A Mill in Eichtal

        Est: €80,000 - €100,000

Monogrammed and dated lower left: EO 1839 (EO conjoined) In a forest clearing by a stream stands a mill, surrounded by tall trees. A narrow path runs past it and disappears into the depths of the woods. A girl with a jug in her hand stands at a window of the mill whilst a man leads a donkey along the path. Both have their backs turned towards the painter and don't appear to have noticed him. The painter himself stands away from the path on the bank of the stream, looking towards the picturesque scenery. “Mühle im Eichtal” bears witness to Ernst Ferdinand Oehme's interest in the local landscape, which captivates not through historical buildings or sublime motifs, but through its immediately suggestive poetry. The representation of nature is determined by the subtle modulations of brown and green tones and the play of sunlight falling through the foliage and illuminating the uneven boards of the mill in chromatic tones of yellow and ochre. In this landscape, as in other pictures of that time, one can recognize Oehme's effort to “soften the linear painting style by emphasisng painterly elements” (Bischoff, op. cit. p.90). Oehme created this landscape in 1839 long after his studies under Johan Christian Dahl and his encounter with the art of Caspar David Friedrich, and also long after his Italy trip with his artist friend Ludwig Richter. The artists' conception of landscape changed at that time, the influence of the Düsseldorf painting school making itself noticeable - this period has been termed Late Romantic, in contrast to the first decades of the 19th century in Dresden, when landscape painting was mainly influenced by Friedrich and Dahl. A watercolour by Oehme with almost the same composition has survived, and may be considered the preparatory work of the present painting (ill. 1; Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig, inv. no. 7077). The watercolour is complete but is missing the figures which serve as an anecdotal element in the painting. The changes to the layout of the landscape also catch the eye. Oehme has replaced the stones on the bank of the stream with the green of the grass and has thickened the tree foliage. This has created the poetic image of a native forest landscape coined by subtle pictorial light and colouring.

OEHME, ERNST FERDINAND Dresden 1797 - 1855 Chapel on a Mountain in Winter. Oil on canvas. 78 x 110 cm. Signed and dated lower right: E. Oehme 1842. Framed. Provenance: - Dresden Akademische Kunstausstellung 1842 under the title "Kapelle im Gebirge, Winterlanschaft"; - Acquisition of the Sächsischer Kunstverein; - in the course of a lottery to Kreishauptmann von Schwarzenfels in Altenberge near Kahla; - Private collection Mecklenburg-Vorpommern since the 1970s. Literature: - mentioned in: Boetticher, Friedrich von: Malerwerke des Neunzehnten Jahrhunderts, Vol. II,1, p.174, no. 34; - Neidhardt, Hans Joachim: E.F. Oehme. Werkverzeichnis der Gemälde und bildmäßigen Zeichnungen. In: Ernst Ferdinand Qehme 1797- 1855. Ein Landschaftsmaler der Romantik. cat. Dresden 1997, p.173-222, p.206, no.187. Assessment: Hans Joachim Neidhardt, Dresden, dated July 15, 2014. Ernst Ferdinand Oehme is one of the most important representatives of the Dresden Romantic. Johan Christian Clausen Dahl and Caspar David Friedrich nurtured the young painter's talent whose romantic and devout symoblism is more ostensible and responsive than his teacher's (Friedrich). Contrary to Friedrich's visionary abstracting view, Oehme emphasizes the pittoresque features of his motifs. He was close friends with the painters Ludwig Richter and Karl Gottlieb Peschel. Oehme was part of the Monday Fellowships. In 1846 he received the title court painter and the honorary membership in the Academy of Arts. The subject of the chapel in the mountains occupied the Dresden artist for about one decade and he created at least six works on paper of it. In Prof. Dr. Hans Joachim Neidhardt's assessment the present rediscovered work is described as "one of the artist's chief works from his most productive period. At the same time it indicates the peak of the German late romantic painting." [translation] He places the work on the same level with three of the best known works from the German late romantic. In 1842, the year of the painting's origin the Sächsische Kunstverein excludes Ernst Ferdinand Oehmes' oeuvre in order to acquire it afterwards. Doing this the association showed just how relevant this work is and how high they appreciated the artist. Afterwards the painting came into the posession of Kreishauptmann von Schwarzenfels in Altenberga near Kahla. In the early 1970s an art historian from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania saved the painting which had been completely soiled in the meanwhile. This happened in the course of a clearing out of an estate before the final destruction. The condition of the painting made the new owner restore the work himself. In the course of the cleaning he revealed Ernst Ferdinand Oehme's signature under a thick layer of soil. The unprofessional restorations which did hardly effect the original substance from the 70s have been corrected by a professional restoration beforehand the auction. We would like to thank Sascha Tyrra for his trust in us. A close cooperation with Sascha Tyrra Kunstvermittlung made the sale of the work possible.

Neidhardt, Hans Joachim, in Ernst Ferdinand Oehme - Ein Landschaftsmaler der Romantik, exhibition catalogue, Dresden, 1997, p. 103. Expert assessment: By Prof. Dr. Neidhardt, Dresden, dated October 2013 The small oil study of the missing painting "Triumph der Natur" (Triumph of Nature) depicts the ramp by the lake of Moritzburg with part of its balustrade and two stone parforce horn blowers. The main work "Triumph der Natur", highly appreciated by critiques at the time, prompted bold interpretations as to the transcience and hideousness of Baroque architecture when presented at the Saxonian Art Association. As a consequence of the great enthusiasm for this work Oehme subsequently produced several replics in oil and watercolour. His main oeuvre dates back to 1845, which means the present study was created shortly before that time.

Oehme's depiction of the mountain chapel aroused considerable attention as it was included in the King-Ludwig-Album, which was presented to the Regent at the occasion of the unveiling of the Bavaria statue on the Theresienwiese in Munich on October 9, 1850. Moreover, Carl Fedderle created a wood engraved reproduction and W. Witthöft an etching of the painting which made the motif widely popular.
