        Oct. 29, 2024

        Yutaka Ohashi (NY/Japan, b. 1923) Untitled, Mixed Media, 1963

        Est: $800 - $1,200

Property of Jane Tucker-Radley Description: Yutaka Ohashi (NY/Japan, b. 1923) Untitled Abstract, Mixed Media on Canvas, 1963, signed, dated 1963 and possibly titled Fortress verso, in a giltwood frame. Frame size:22 in. x 16 3/4 in. Yutaka Ohashi was born on August 19, 1923, in Hiroshima. During World War II, he attended the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. Ohashi continued his studies in Boston at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in 1950 - 1955. He had his first solo exhibition at BostonÕs Margaret Brown Gallery in fall 1955, in the following years his work was displayed at group shows at the Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, Massachusetts (1956); Art Institute of Chicago (1957); and Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston (1957). He reicieved the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship in 1959 and again in 1960. Ohashi was known for paintings that integrated the restrained, purposeful act of collage, adding texture and changing registers of density to large, encompassing abstract forms. He added semitransparent layers of rice paper to the foreground of his paintings and, at times, partly obscured the rice paper with layers of oil paint. This technique, combined with large swaths of negative space and occasional highlights in gold leaf, contributes to fluctuating perceptions of space within OhashiÕs compositions. (Guggenheim.org) Measurements: Height: by sight 21 1/8 in. x Width: 16 in. Condition: Good condition, white drip of paint upper left corner. Notice to bidders: The absence of a condition report does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections, or the conditions of aging. He moved to New York in 1959 after receiving a Guggenheim fellowship, and it was in New York that he began a fruitful exchange of ideas with some of the leading Abstract Expressionists of the time. This dialogue between traditional Japanese painting and the themes and styles employed by the Abstract Expressionists can be found in much of his later work, including in the present lot.
