      Autograph quotation signed, dated “Boston Nov 2d 1870” by the American physician, poet, and polymath. His most famous prose works are the "Breakfast-Table" series, which began with The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table (1858). He was also an important medical reformer. Holmes pens four lines of his poem “Union and Liberty”: “Lord of the Universe! shield us and guide us, Trusting Thee always, through shadow and sun! Thou hast united us, who shall divide us? Keep us, oh keep us the MANY IN ONE!”. 1 p. (18.5 x 10.5 cm). - This item is under temporary import. A clean copy with no markings; text pages crisp and fresh. Covered in dark green paper over boards with black lettering and with a color pastedown of artwork by cartoonist Don Herold on front. The cover is clean; lightly shelf-worn with rubbing along edges, some scuffing to paper along spine folds, short tears at top of spine. The pastedown rubbed but bright and attractive. Binding a bit loose but intact. 2- The Adventures of a Brownie as told to my child by the Author of John Halifax Gelntleman (Dinah Marie Murlock) published Harper & Brothers, New York, 1872.
