Sevillian school from the 16th century to the beginning of the 17th century. Father-in-law of the universal Master of the Spanish Baroque Don Diego de Velázques, his painting, sweetly made and undoubtedly Mannerist that drank from the flamenco artistic currents that arrived in Seville at the time, softened somewhat after his trip to Madrid, El Escorial and Toledo, in 1611. The knowledge of the royal collections and the painting of El Greco had to influence the improvement of the treatment of the coloring and the modeling of his works, allowing its preponderance in the Seville of the time until shortly before 1630. It was at those times when Pacheco's art entered into clear decline as he could not compete with the new painters who dominated the Sevillian scene, such as Zurbarán or Herrera the Elder Measurements: 65 x 50 cm, measurements with frame: 75 x 60 cm. Provenance: important Andalusian private collection (lots 148 to 175).

    • Very important and unpublished Appearance of the Virgin to Saint Ildefonso, Sevillian school from the end of the 16th century, style of Francisco de Pacheco (Sanlúcar de Barrameda, 1564-Seville, 1644)
      Jul. 06, 2023

Very important and unpublished Appearance of the Virgin to Saint Ildefonso, Sevillian school from the end of the 16th century, style of Francisco de Pacheco (Sanlúcar de Barrameda, 1564-Seville, 1644)

      Est: €60,000 - €80,000

Oil on canvas, canvas measures: 126 x 101 cm, framed measures: 147 x 122 cm. We are faced with a work undoubtedly by a master and clearly framed in the Sevillian school of the late 16th century, halfway between a late Mannerism characteristic of the Sevillian school and the emergence of the Baroque. With a loving gesture, we observe the Blessed Virgin Mary with the Child in her arms on a half moon and Saint Ildefonso, prostrate before her and with his hands in a prayerful gesture, with the miter and the Holy Bible in the lower left corner. Francisco Pacheco (Sanlúcar de Barrameda, 1564-Seville, 1644) was a leading painter of Sevillian Mannerism. His real name was Francisco Pérez del Río, but he adopted as his own the name of his uncle, the lawyer and canon Francisco Pacheco. He was a teacher and father-in-law of Velázquez, as well as teacher of Alonso Cano and Francisco López Caro. Velázquez's father-in-law and father of what he would become his future wife, On November 17, 1611, Pacheco signed the contract whereby he received Velázquez as an apprentice, who had been in his house for a few months. In 1618 he consented to the marriage of the young painter with his daughter Juana Pacheco (Seville, June 1, 1602-Madrid, August 10, 1660), a not unusual event at the time, where the master married his daughters with the most advanced students of him. He arranged for Velázquez to travel to Madrid and introduced him to the Count-Duke of Olivares, which would turn his career upside down. Bibliography: García Rodríguez, José Carlos (1991). FRANCISCO PACHECO (Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Cádiz, 1564 – Seville, 1644). and workshop Saint Edward the Martyr, King of England. Oil on canvas. Keep the original fabric.

      Est: €6,000 - €7,000

FRANCISCO PACHECO (Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Cádiz, 1564 - Seville, 1644). and workshop "Saint Edward Martyr, King of England". Oil on canvas. The original canvas is preserved. Attached is an expert report issued by Don Enrique Valdivieso. It presents restorations, repites and shows perforation. Measurements: 130 x 80 cm; 156 x 104 cm (frame). This image shows the image of Saint Edward the Martyr, who in his portrait appears crowned and with a sword stuck to the hilt in his chest. His arms are crossed in symbolic acceptance of his martyrdom, a gesture that intensifies the serene expression of his face, turned upwards. The following text appears on the moulding: In fraude circunvenientium affuit illi (In fraud circumvenientium affuit illi. (He assisted him in the crime of those who deceived him. Wisdom 10). The cartouche bears the following inscription: S. Eduardus Anglia rex a noverca ex insidie interfectus. Obiit die 18 Marta anno Dñi 981. (St. Edward King of England was killed by his stepmother. He died on the 18th of March in the year of our Lord 981). It can be noted that the face of this monarch clearly coincides with the expression shown in the Saint Sebastian that was in the Hospital of Aléala de Guadaira and which was destroyed in 1936'. Aesthetically the work is close to Pacheco's painting, and in the article "A Series of Holy Kings of England by Francisco Pacheco, the art historian Enrique Valdiveso investigates the creation of a series of eight portraits dedicated to the English holy kings, which was commissioned from the painter in around 1630. Francisco Pacheco was a Mannerist painter and art treatise writer chiefly remembered for his role as a teacher of Velázquez, whose father-in-law he was. Although he was born in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, before 1580 he was already in Seville, where his uncle was a canon of the cathedral. He soon became part of the cultured and artistic circles of the city while training as a painter in the workshop of Luis Fernández. Qualified as an independent master in 1585, he enjoyed a wide clientele due to his good relations with the clergy, the aristocracy and the municipal authorities of Seville. With the arrival of the new century Pacheco established himself as the foremost painter of the Sevillian school, although he was soon eclipsed by the Flemish Juan de Roelas, who remained in the city between 1604 and 1616. Between 1610 and 1611 he travelled to Madrid and visited El Escorial and Toledo, where he had dealings with El Greco. That same year, 1611, Diego Velázquez joined his workshop as an apprentice. His literary production included the "Libro de descripción de verdaderos retratos de ilustres y memorables varones", an incomplete collection of almost seventy portraits accompanied by short biographical sketches of the main intellectuals in his circle, as well as other outstanding artists and writers. In the last years of his life he devoted himself to writing the artistic treatise "Arte de la pintura", completed in 1641 and published posthumously in 1649. Pacheco's works are currently held in important collections such as the Museo del Prado, the Academia de San Fernando in Madrid, the Museo de Bellas Artes in Seville, the Seville Cathedral (among other Seville churches), the Uffizi Gallery in Florence and the Museo Lázaro Galdiano in Madrid, among others.

      Nov. 04, 2021

      FRANCISCO PACHECO (1564 / 1644) "Santa Catalina de Siena", c. 1620

      Est: €13,500 - €18,000

This beautiful panel depicting Saint Catherine of Siena is an excellent example of Francisco Pacheco's work. Its attribution to the Sevillian master is based on the total coincidence of composition, drawing and colouring with other works by this artist and, especially, with another Saint Catherine belonging to a private collection in Madrid (E. Valdivieso, Pintura Barroca Sevillana, 2003, p. 124, plate 114). Similarly, this same model of a saint with a gesture of mystical rapture is also practically identical in the Museo Nacional del Prado's Saint Catherine and Saint Agnes, which once formed part of the altarpiece of Doña Francisca de León in the church of the Sevillian convent of Santo Ángel. The saint appears in this work with her usual iconographic symbols such as the crown of thorns on her head and the elements she holds in her hands: on the left a heart from which a crucifix emerges, a witness to the enormous devotion and love she felt for the person of Christ, and on the right a bouquet of lilies symbolising her virginal purity. His mastery of drawing and chromaticism is typical of his work: the figure of the saint is perfectly cut out against a greenish-grey background in which the black and white of the Dominican habit stand out. The beauty of the painting, its state of preservation and the scarcity of the painter's works on the market make it an important piece for collectors. Attached is a report by Enrique Valdivieso González, issued in Seville on 13 September 2021. . Oil on panel. 55 x 50,5 cm.
