      HENRY PARKE (BRITISH C. 1790-1835) HENRY PARKE (BRITISH C. 1790-1835) An Mediterranean city seen from the River signed l.r.: H. Parke (on the mount) watercolour over traces of pencil 20 x 28 cm A pupil and assistant to Sir John Soane in his antiquarian pursuits from 1814, Henry Parke first exhibited marine scenes at the R.A. from 1815. After travelling extensively in Greece and Italy from 1820 he went to Egypt from 1823-24 accompanying the traveller and collector Henry Westcar (1798-1868). Parke drew the antiquities and exhibited pictures of ancient ruins in Italy, Greece and Egypt at the R.A. and the Royal Institute. Examples of his work can be found in the British Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum and the RIBA.

      Henry Parke (London c.1792-1835) A Royal Navy frigate in Mediterranean waters off Capri signed and dated 'H. Parke. 1830' (lower right) and inscribed 'The high Rock at the East end of the Island of Capri./On the summit are some vestiges of an ancient Palace,/supposed to be that of the Emperor Tiberius (on a label attached to the mount) pencil and watercolour with scratching out, on paper, unframed 6¾ x 10½ in. (17.2 x 26.7 cm.)
