PAUL, John Dean (1802-1868) and [Henry ALKEN]. A Trip to Melton Mowbray. London: published for the Proprietor by S. and J. Fuller, 1822. A hand-coloured aquatint panorama [by H. Alken] after Paul, containing 14 numbered scenes joined (90 x 6600mm. overall). (Scenes 2, 12 and 13 with closed tears into image, a few other short tears and snags at margins, scene 11 with small area of loss.) In original boxwood roller with hand-coloured pictorial title label, varnished (label chipped). Provenance: C.F.G.R. Schwerdt (his sale, 19 June 1939, lot 527; lot no. preserved on base) -- Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester (his sale, Christie's London, 26-27 January 2006, lot 701). 'ONE OF THE MOST ATTRACTIVE HUNTING PICTURES OF THIS PERIOD, which marks the zenith of hunting in England' (Schwerdt). Half of the long panorama is actually devoted to the journey out of London and then onwards to Melton, and it is as interesting for its coaching as for its beautiful fox-hunting scenes. Sir J.D. Paul, a well-known banker, illustrated various works on fox-hunting, but probably received extensive assistance from Alken with this panorama. Abbey Life 488; Gee Sporting Panoramas 6; Dixon 50: 'of very great rarity'; Schwerdt III, p. 3: 'attributed to Alken without hesitation'.

        JOHN PAUL

        Est: $3,000 - $5,000

JOHN PAUL I(1912 - 1978) Pope elected Supreme Pontiff on the second day of the conclave, died only 33 days after assuming the role. Extraordinarily rare S.P. as Pope, 3" x 4 3/4" color, a heavy paperstock Vatican-issued image of John Paul I showing him as Pope from the chest, up, signed with a shaky at bottom: "Joannes Paulus PP I". The verso bears a copy of an earlier handwritten signed prayer by the Pope. Fine condition. From the 57-year collection of Tommy Scullion, the sale of which was featured in England's Daily Express, The Sun, and on the BBC. Scullion took great pains to be assured that his autographs were authentic, and would persist for years to ensure that he obtained the signatures he desired. John Paul I was found dead sitting up in his bed shortly before dawn on September 29, 1978, just 33 days into his papacy. The Vatican reported that the 65-year old Pope most likely died the previous night of a myocardial infarction. However, a degree of uncertainty accompanies this diagnosis since an autopsy was not performed. Debate continues to swirl, with the Vatican maintaining that John Paul I had been in frail health for an extended period of time, which was exacerbated by the rigors of his position and as is evidenced by the shakiness of the late pontiff's signature on our photo. Due to the brevity of his term, any item signed by John Paul I as Pope is excessively rare.
