      BARTOLOZZI, Francesco (1728-1815), a partir de Domenico Pellegrini (1759-1840) "D. João VI, enquanto Príncipe Regente" Gravura sobre cobre, aberta a buril e ponteado, impressa em papel, 1809 D. João representado com busto voltado a três quartos para a direita, fardado e condecorado. Na parte inferior do retrato está uma figura da Amazona Lísia, sentada sobre nuvens, encostada a um escudo com o brasão de armas real e tendo ao peito um pequeno escudo com as cinco quinas; à direita da divindade, senta-se um Amorino, segurando a esfera armilar. Junto à base do retrato figura a subscrição latina: "STAT MAGNA NOMINIS UMBRA" (Eis a sombra de um grande nome). Apresentam as seguintes inscrições que identificam o autor da gravura, à direita, "F. Bartolozzi sculpsit 1809", e, à esquerda, o autor da composição pictórica original "D. Pellegrini pinxit". Dim. aprox. mancha: 21 x 13,5 cm; Dim. aprox. total: 45,5 x 38 cm Papel com manchas de humidade e pequeno restauro. Desgastes. DOMENICO PELLEGRINI WAS BORN IN GALLERIA IN ITALY AND STUDIED FIRST IN VENICE AND THEN IN ROME UNDER DOMENICO CORVI. HE CAME OVER TO LONDON IN 1792 AT THE ENCOURAGEMENT OF HIS FELLOW COUNTRYMAN FRANCESCO BARTOLOZZI (WHOSE PORTRAIT HE HAS PAINTED IN VENICE). PELLEGRINI CONTINUED TO EXHIBIT IN LONDON UNTIL 1812, BUT LATER RETURNED TO ROME. PAINTING MEASURES 28-1/4" X 42-1/4". FAIR TO GOOD CONDITION, SOME PAINT LOSS, CRAZING, AND STAINING THROUGHOUT.

      THE PROPERTY OF A LADY VENUS AND CUPID measurements note 103 by 144 cm., 40 ½ by 56 ¾ in. signed l.l.: D Pellegrini / 1792 oil on canvas EXHIBITED Royal Academy, 1793, no. 281 NOTE Domenico Pellegrini was born in Galliera in Italy and studied first in Venice and then in Rome under Domenico Corvi. He came over to London in 1792 and joined the schools of the Royal Academy where he was encouraged by his fellow Italian Francesco Bartolozzi (whose portrait by Pellegrini is in Venice). He continued to exhibit in England until 1812 and also visited Lisbon, probably encouraged by Bartolozzi who had settled there. Later he moved to Rome. This fine picture is amongst the first which he exhibited at the Royal Academy and shows the influence of his training in Venice.
