She found her motifs in Viennese fashion from the Baroque to the Biedermeier. She made the linocuts for the German company Wohlgemuth and Lissner, which had German and Austrian artists such as Lovis Corinth and Käthe Kollwitz under contract. Penther was a member of the Wiener Werkstätte. She attended the graphic arts teaching and research institute in Vienna and then studied at the Vienna School of Applied Arts under Wilhelm Müller-Hofmann, Franz Cizek and Erich Mallina. She mostly published self-printed small graphic series and handwritten books. She also designed over fifty bookplates, primarily using the woodcut technique. She was a member of the Association of Female Artists in Austria. As a painter, she created landscapes and still lifes in oil and watercolor and from the 1940s onwards she primarily focused on encaustics. Her works include: at the Belvedere in Vienna. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked °), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax of 13%, for photographys 20%, is added to the sum of the highest bid and the buyer's premium. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.

      Sylvia Penther colored woodcut. Signed 'Sylvia Penther' in pencil lower right. Woodcut on tissue and is mounted at each corner on heavy paper. Measures 9.25-in. x 10.5-in. image size, 10.5-in. x 11.75-in. sheet size, 11.5-in. x 13-in. mounted paper size. In VG/EX condition, with tape residue upper edge of paper print is mounted upon. One small hole in margin of sheet, left middle. Small tear beginning on mounted sheet and extending 1-cm into upper margin of sheet, middle. Unframed, loose and not mounted or glued down. If lot is absent of a condition report a condition report may be requested via email. Condition report is provided as an opinion only and is no guarantee as grading can be subjective. Buyer must view photographs or scans to assist in determining condition and ask further questions if so desired. Provenance: Amity Art Foundation, Inc. collection.
