Jacob Petersen (Danish, 1774-1855) Portrait of the Brig Leander of Salem. Signed and identified l.r. and l.c., shown off the port of Copenhagen with Cronburg Castle to the starboard bow. Gouache, watercolor, and graphite on paper, 18 1/4 x 23 in., in a molded giltwood frame. Condition: Laid down onto cardboard, small losses to upper corners and edge, scattered staining and foxing, overall toning. N.B. A self-taught artist, Petersen was also a sailor and pilot. C.W. Eckersberg, a leading Danish painter of the time, helped Petersen improve his draftsmanship, while Petersen in exchange taught Eckersberg technical rigging. The Leander belonged to Joseph Peabody, cousin of the philanthropist George Peabody. The former was among the wealthiest ship owners in Salem from the embargo to 1845. The brig, 223 tons, built in Salem in 1821, completed twenty-six voyages to Europe, Africa, Asia Minor, and the Far East. It was in service for twenty-three years.

The brig Quay Side in three positions signed with initials and dated 'JP 1876' (lower right) and insribed 'Brig Quay Side in a gale. Commanded by R.W. Hall' (lower left) oil on canvas 211/2 x 30 in. (54.7 x 76.3 cm.) NOTES The long-lived wooden snow/brig Quay Side was built at Sunderland in 1832 for Hall & Co. of Newcastle. After twenty years in Lloyd's Registers, where she appears continually as a Baltic trader, she disappears from record for about ten years before reappearing under a new owner, R. Blumer, around 1860. Subsequently - though after this painting was executed in 1876 - re-rigged as a brig, she passed into the ownership of Craven's of Whitby (Captain Hardcastle) and foundered in a force 7 gale off the approaches to the Humber estuary on 12 th January 1886.

Petersen' (lower right) pen and black ink and watercolour heightened with white 183/4 x 25in. (47.6 x 63.5cm.) NOTES The brig Vulture, 165 tons, was built at Shaldon, near Teignmouth, South Devon, in 1828, but does not appear in Lloyd's Registers of Shipping until about 1840, by which time she was commanded by Captain Thomas Gilbert. Having changed her master by 1848, this painting of Vulture can be dated to the 1840's during which decade one of her several destinations was Viania in Scandinavia.
