      James Thomas Poindexter (American, 1832-1891). Oil on canvas. Housed in a gilt frame; 29.25 x 24.5 in. (sight). Though unsigned, this portrait bears a striking resemblance to Poindexter portraits of the Noble children currently curated at the Filson Historical Society, in Louisville, Kentucky (See E. C. Pennington (2010) Lessons in Likeness: Portrait Painters in Kentucky and the Ohio River Valley, 1802-1920). Provenance: Property from the Collection of Dr. M. Donald Hayes. James Thomas Poindexter (1832-1891) was born in Christian County, KY, and was married at the age of twenty. He and his wife relocated to Evansville, Indiana, where he launched his professional career. The Evansville Museum of Fine Arts and Historical Society hold several examples of his work. Although Poindexter spent a brief period in New Orleans and Granada, the majority of his active career was spent fulfilling commissions in Kentucky and Indiana, where Evansville is a bordering town.

      Kentucky Portrait of Iredell P. Davie by J.T. Poindexter (1832-1891), oil on canvas, signed l.l. J.T. Poindexter and inscribed Pinxitt/1853, 20th century frame; 30" high x 25" wide (sight). Accompanying this lot is an archive of papers on the Davie family and the artist. The sitter is Iredell Phillips Davie (1846-1907), part of the prominent Davie family of Christian County, Kentucky. Winston Jones Davie, father of the sitter, was the first Commissioner of Agriculture in the State of Kentucky, appointed by Governor James B. McCreary, and was also the president of the Southern Bank of Tennessee. James Thomas Poindexter was born in 1832 in Christian County, Kentucky, and was married at the age of twenty. He and his wife relocated to Evansville, Indiana, where he launched his professional career. Although Poindexter spent a brief period in New Orleans and Granada, the majority of his active career was spent fulfilling commissions in Kentucky and Indiana, where Evansville is a bordering town; he died in Eddyville, Kentucky, in 1891. The Evansville Museum of Fine Arts and Historical Society hold the largest collections of his work. Cracqueleur throughout. A 2" tear near the waist of his pants, also small hole. Examined under blacklight.
