Um 1800. -- Die beiden Farbstiche wurden nach Zeichnungen Pierre Antoine Poiteaus (1766-1854), einem Botaniker, Pomologen und Gärtner angefertigt. Ab 1790 war er am Pariser 'Muséum national d'histoire naturelle' angestellt und ab 1796 reiste er nach Haiti und um 1820 nach Guayana. 1815 wurde er zum Leiter der königlichen Baumschule von Versailles ernannt, sowie später leitender Gärtner in Fontainebleau und am Botanischen Garten der Pariser Medizinschule. – Leicht lichtrandig und gebräunt. – Dabei: Turpin. Obstdarstellungen "Api Noir" und "Amer-doux-gris". 2 Farbstiche von Bouquet bzw. Giraud aus Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceaus "Traité des arbres fruitiers". 32,5 x 24 cm (Plattenrand). Page size: 50 x 31.5 cm, image size: 27.5 x 19 cm. Artist - Pancrace Bessa (1772-1846), student of Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840), engraver - Francois Noel Sellier (1737-1790). The edges are cropped. Minor dirt, foxings /// The edition "Choix de plantes : dont la plupart sont cultivees dans le jardin de Cels" is very rare. The artist Pierre-Joseph Redouté and the botanist Étienne Pierre Ventenat had worked together before. The first joint work of Redouté and Ventenat was a commission from Empress Joséphine de Beauharnais for the artistic decoration of her garden of rare plants in Malmaison. As a result, the famous "Garden of Malmaison" (1803-04) was created . The book "A Selection of Plants, Most of Which Are Grown in Cels's Garden", published around the same time, is further evidence of their successful collaboration. Jacques-Philippe-Martin Cels (1740-1806) was a tax collector from 1761 up until the Revolution, when he was forced to resign and devote himself to the study of botany under the direction of Bernard de Jussie and Louis-Guillaume Le Monnier and under the influence of Rousseau. At the beginning of the 19th century, Cels laid out a garden of about 18 hectares, first described by Ventenat in “Description of new and little-known plants grown in the garden of J.M. Sels” (1800-1802) with 100 color illustrations by P.J. Redoubt. The second book, “A Selection of Plants, Most of Which Are Grown in the Cels's Garden,” is his second book, which reflects the beauty of the famous garden of Celsus, recognized by contemporaries as one of the most beautiful in Europe.

Sandra Raphael notes that 'from 1807 to 1835 a new edition of Duhamel du Monceau's Traité des Arbres fruitiers, expanded by Poiteau and Turpin, was published in 72 parts with over 400 new plates. Ten years later, after Turpin's death, it was reprinted with a new title under the name of Poiteau alone.' The latter had been responsible for the text, although Turpin was also a botanist, and both belonged to the group of flower and fruit artists associated with Redouté. The truly 'magnifiques gravures' are devoted to peaches and plums (vol. I), cherries and strawberries (vol. II), gooseberries and pears (vol. III), and a luxurious array of apples (vol. IV). Oak Spring Pomona 31; Nissen BBI 551.4 volumes, folio (420 x 272mm). Half-titles with plate-lists on verso, 420 fine stipple-engraved plates printed in colour and finished by hand after Poiteau and P.J.F. Turpin, and 3 uncoloured engravings. Four attractive stipple engravings with hand-coloring, from Pomologie française;recueil des plus beaux fruits cultivés en France. (Paris: 1846). All are in very good condition with toning and light spotting. Colmar has some minor paper loss to corners. All have mounting tape to reverse. All have light penciled notations. The first three prints measure 11.75 x 17 inches, and the last print measures 12 x 16.75 inches.

Four stipple engravings with hand-coloring, most likely from Pomologie française; recueil des plus beaux fruits cultivés en France. (Paris: 1846). All are in very good condition with overall toning and spotting. Royale hâtivel has a thin strip of dampstaining along the left edge. Raisin précoce is specifically attributed to Poiteau and has darker spotting in the image area. Ronce à fruit bleu is attributed to Turpin and is more heavily toned than the others; it also has some offsetting along the left side. All but the last print have mounting tape to the reverse. All have light penciled notations. The first three prints measure 11.75 x 17 inches, and the last (the Turpin print) measures 14.25 x 19.75 inches.

Modern buckram, original front wrappers bound in (front wrappers repaired). Provenance : Massachusetts Horticultural Society, J.D. Williams French Fund (bookplates dated 1908; stamps). A fine collection of Poiteau's cherry and berry plates from one of the rarest books on fruit. The plates are from Duhamel's Trait‚ des Arbes frutiers (1808-35), republished by Poiteau on his own. The author, Antoine Risso, was a French apothecary and botanist who spent all his life in Nice. Antoine Poiteau, the illustrator, began his career as an apprentice gardener at the Jardin des Plantes, and spent some time in the Caribbean collecting plants before returning to Paris in 1800 and turning to botanical illustration, with an initial style modelled on Van Spaendonck and Redout‚. Apart from the illustrations, he provided much information on citrus varieties native to the Tropics.
