On the front door, full-page portrait of the dedicatee of the work, by MM Bousquet, frontispiece printed in red and black characters with vignette with portrait of the author engraved by Will after Kneller, 5 full-page plates engraved by Gallimard, numerous vignettes engraved by Soubeyran after Delamonce, slight browning and some stains, coeval binding in brown calfskin, plates framed by double gold piping and small festoons at the corners.

GREAT ALEXANDER POPE OIL ON CANVAS PAINTING. Wonderful Pope painting, 26" x 20" vertical image, depicting a large hanging ruffed grouse with a faux barn board background. Mr. Pope's signature appears in lower right corner with date "1888". It has been professionally re-stretched and mounted in a beautiful molded gold gesso frame with white sail cloth inner matting. CONDITION: Exceptionally fine. Colors are vivid & bright with sharp, clear image. There is some light age crackling. It appears to have been professionally cleaned. 4-60345 JR624 (7,000-8,500)

RARE ALEXANDER POPE OIL ON CANVAS. Small painting that measures 9-1/8" x 11-11/8" vertical image of two cow elk in deep snow at edge of a forest. The elk are on alert and staring directly at artist as thought looking into a camera lens. Artist's signature is in lower right corner. Mounted on a very old stretcher and framed in a repainted gold molded frame. CONDITION: Very fine. Image is crisp & bright with vivid colors & has one tiny chip in upper right corner not affecting image. This painting comes from the same family as the other five Pope's in this sale. It's canvas attachment to stretcher is identical, age and style contribute to the thought that it could be by Alexander Pope. Inscribed in chalk in block letters at top of stretcher Mary Chase. Provenance: Probably acquired from the artist, descended from the Dutton-Chase family of Medford, Mass. SIZE: 40" h x 30" w. CONDITION: Good. 65-13.
