Asahel L. Powers Sold at Auction Prices

Porträtmaler, b. 1813 - d. 1843

The eldest son of seven siblings, Asahel Lynde Powers was born in Springfield, Vermont. By the age of eighteen Powers had developed a recognizable Folk Art style as his earliest known portrait is dated 1831. It already showed his characteristic use of vibrant decorative background colors in portraiture. In 1893 Asahel Lynde Powers moved to New York State, working in Franklin and Clinton Counties, where he collaborated with another artist named Rice. More than seventy portrait likenesses by Powers are known, including men, women, children in oil on both wooden panels and canvas. In 1841 Poweres moved again, this time to Olney in Richland County, Illinois. It is not known if he continued producing paintings after this move as none have been found from the Illinois period. He died in Illinois in 1843.

The former owner was informed by the Butterfields' great-great-granddaughter of a letter she received from the Springfield Historical Society. The granddaughter had read a story about the Society loaning their Powers painting to the exhibit of the Rockefeller Folk Art Collection in Williamsburg, Virginia in 1973. This prompted her to bring her family's portraits to their attention. Mrs. Fred Herrick of the Historical Society replied: "This is very exciting because the people who have done research on this subject and the woman, Nina Little, who is writing a book on Powers, has come to the conclusion that all of Powers' work is accounted for except three". It appears these are two of the three missing portraits. Oil on canvas, 20" x 19.25". Wax relining. Framed.

ASAHEL LYNDE POWERS American, 1813-1843 Pair of portraits depicting Daniel Griswold and his daughter Louisa Griswold Field. Daniel was born in 1792 in Springfield, Vermont, and Louisa was born in 1808 and married Abner Field, the first postmaster of North Springfield, Vermont. The portrait of Daniel is signed lower right "Painted by Powers & Rice...1835 Daniel Griswold Tavern Owner No. Springfield". The portrait of Louisa is signed lower right "P.T.D. by Powers & Rice". It is also inscribed on the reverse "Portrait of Louisa Griswold Field painted in her wedding dress". Asahel Lynde Powers was an itinerant portrait painter initially based in Vermont, but travelled extensively from Vermont to Illinois, where he would eventually pass away in 1843. He refers to the painter being in the June 1959 Antiques magazine. A 1975 letter from an Associate Curator of the Rockefeller collection refers to four more signed "Powers and Rice" portraits of Griswold family members, recently found in storage at the Smithsonian's Museum of History and Technology.
