Pupini dalle Lame, Biagio: Hl. Thomas

      Est: €1,000 - €1,200

-- - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

      Est: €10,000 - €15,000

(Bologna active 1504–1558) The Nativity with a shepherd and Salome, oil on panel, 23 x 46.5 cm, framed Provenance (according to labels on the reverse): Alexander Penrose Forbes (1817–1875), Bishop of Brechin, Dundee; Collection of Cornelia Kouwenhoven van Neuren (1893–1981), Voorburg, The Netherlands; Collection of Dr. Martin de Wild (1899–1969), The Netherlands, possibly 1960s Exhibited (according to a label on the reverse): Dundee, Free Library and Museum Buildings, Fine Art Exhibition, November 1873, p. 16, cat. no. 188 (as Luca Signorelli) We are grateful to Enrico Ghetti for suggesting the attribution and for his help in cataloguing this lot. The present Nativity or Adoration of the Shepherds includes an elder woman depicted on the right of the composition who could be identified as Saint Anne, however, it has been suggested, that this figure is Salome, a figure frequently represented in Orthodox icons of the Nativity, following the apocryphal Gospel of James (XIX, 3; XX, 1). The present panel displays elements of Emilian Cinquecento painting, combining stylistic characteristics typical for Bologna, Parma and Ferrara and has been given to Biagio Pupini. The artist trained in the workshop of Francesco Francia (1460–1517) and Amico Aspertini (1474/1475–1552) but was also influenced by Girolamo da Carpi (1501–1556) and Parmigianino (1503–1540). The slender and elegant figures with pointed facial features appear in other works by the painter, including the Madonna with Child, Saint Jerome and Four Saints conserved in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin and the Marriage of the Madonna in Palazzo Pitti, Florence (see R. Serra, Biagio Pupini non solo disegni, in: Intrecci d’arte, 10, 2021, pp. 33–49). Little is known about Biagio Pupini’s upbringing and education. However, in his Viridario from 1513, Giovanni Filoteo Achillini praised the musical and artistic talents of a certain ‘Biasio’, who most likely is to be identified with Biagio Pupini. The artist’s first documented commission is a now lost fresco cycle in San Pietro in Vincoli, Faenza 1511, executed together with Bartolomeo Ramenghi, il Bagnacavallo (1484–1542).

Bierens de Haan, L'Oeuvre Gravé de Cornelis Cort, The Hague 1948, p. 45, cat. no. 20, plate 6, as F. Zuccaro). Another autograph version by Pupini, in black chalk and brown wash on blue paper, was sold New York, Sotheby's, 19 January 1989, lot 244. The artist also returned to the subject on several other occasions, but using a different design, in drawings in Florence, Biblioteca Marucelliana (see Disegni e Incisioni della Raccolta Marucelliana, Florence 1983/1984, no. 155) and Paris, Louvre, Cabinet des Dessins (inv. no. 8840).

THE SCOURGING OF A MALE SAINT measurements note 247 by 196mm; 9 3/4 by 7 11/16 in bears old attribution in pen and black ink: F. Parmagiano and numbering: 8 pen and brown ink and wash heightened with white; arched top PROVENANCE Crozat? (bears numbering, 8, similar to his); William Bates (L.2604); sale, London, Sotheby's, 9 July 1981, lot 3; sale, London, Christie's, 19 April 1994, lot 9; with Adolphe Stein, Paris; Private collection, Belgium EXHIBITED Rotterdam, Kunsthal, European Master Drawings Unveiled, 2002, no. 78, reproduced NOTE The style of this very attractive study by Pupini is reminiscent of Parmigianino, to whom it was traditionally attributed. Parmigianino was in Bologna circa 1527-30 and was extremely influential in the formation of the younger generation of Emilian artists. A certain similarity in the composition and use of space can be seen with a panel representing the Marriage of the Virgin, which was attributed to Pupini by Philip Pouncey (now in Palazzo Pitti; see Vera Fortunati Pietrantonio, Pittura Bolognese, Bologna 1986, vol. I, reproduced p. 202). Because of its debt to Parmigianino, the painting must be datable to the mid 1530s.
