First venturing into the world of art as an architect, troubles during Martial Law redirected Orlina’s attention back to his first love – the glass. His first exhibit at the Hyatt Hotel in 1975 presented a collection of paintings done on glass. What made his works stand out is his method – unlike the usual method of blowing hot glass to shape it however the sculptor wishes, Orlina chipped away at a cold block of ice as though it was marble. This was unlike anything the world has ever seen, in the Philippines and beyond and it launched Orlina into the international spotlight.   The early works of Orlina are characterized by its sharp edges and straight lines. After all, with no mentor in sight, Orlina was forced to learn the medium and the method by himself. He even had to make his own equipment himself, he once told interviewers, so solitude was the path to glass cutting at his time.   However, as he had gained proficiency and experience, he soon became able to manipulate glass as though it were clay. He was able to move past the sharp edge as he is now able to create swooping curves and soft edges uncharacteristic of his early works.   Gumamela Petal is among those later works. Done in 2006, Orlina is now able to change the curvature of glass himself as he mimics the soft curves of a gumamela petal. The gumamela, better known internationally as the hibiscus flower, bloomed as an ornamental plant in the Philippines. It decorated the gardens of many families, a spot of color amongst the greeneries,   Orlina’s works are a multidimensional experience, a magnificent affair that befits the Father of Philippine Glass Sculpture. To see it personally is to marvel at the way the light passes through to translucent glass and its sharply cut edges, showing a masterfully structured piece. In the case of Gumamela Petal, even through the use of bronze Asahi glass, the translucency of the flower’s petals is evident. Through just the right angle, one could see the light bounce and filter through the glass, much like the sunlight as it passes through the hibiscus petal.

Ramon Orlina (b. 1944) Untitled signed and dated 1990 (lower right) 10” x 9” x 4 1/2” (25 cm x 23 cm x 11 cm) Ramon Orlina, the revered Filipino artist who pioneered the use of the Asahi glass for his sculptures, has contributed immensely in the said field in the country, hence hailed as the “Father of Philippine Glass Sculpture.” Also gaining recognition from the international art scene, Orlina is known for both rendering static geometric forms in the mid-seventies as well as fluid and abstract forms during the eighties in his glass masterpieces. A series of angles, graceful forms, and engaging fragments are marks of his works that seemingly glow with an inner illumination, and various collectors celebrate the timelessness of the beauty of his art. Orlina said in an interview that as an architect-turned-sculptor, he is interested in three-dimensional forms. Glass becomes a profound piece in the hands of this master, engaging the viewer in a moment of introspection. Each glass sculpture is a product of fearless innovation and taming of a difficult medium of choice. These particular pieces showcase Orlina’s play of form, texture, and light, resulting in engaging multisensorial spectacles. It is noted that his sculptures never have a singular focal point. Truly, these sculptures give an overall experience that invites dialogue and shared meaning-making.
