Aquatint from the series Die Bonbonnière, 1907, 22.3 x 20.3 cm, w. vague number 5/10 and (orig.?) signature and date '30 in lower blank margin. Sm. tear in lower blank margin, otherwise a good copy w. ample margins. The authenticity of the pencil annotations could not be verified. To hide his true identity, Ranzenhofer used the pseudonym Emil Sartori for this series of extremely explicit erotic prints, a counterpart of a similar series of prints by Franz von Bayros. Ranzenhofer is better known for his poster designs. -and 7 plates under passepartout after Ernst Deutsch Dryden (1887-1938) and 1 other after Wilhelm Wagner (1887-1968) (w. defects). (total 9)

Condition B+ / A-: slight darkening and small repaired tears in margins; slight offsetting in image; repaired pin holes in corners; unobtrusive horizontal fold; paper insert in lower right corner. By the start of the 20th century, Ranzenhofer had established himself in the worlds of painting and printmaking, poster design and illustration art. Having studied at the Vienna Academy, and after serving for several years in the Austrian army, he was one of the first artists to specialize in commercial advertising in Austria, and as such, contributed greatly to the popularization of Jugendstil. Deriving its name from the Munich publication Die Jugend, "Youth Style," this late 19th century movement corresponded with and related to the Art Nouveau movement in England and arts and crafts movement in Japan, and later, tended toward the more abstract works of Belgian-born Henry van de Velde. Firmly planted in the earlier Art Nouveau style of Austrian poster art, this image advertises the Wiener Mode fashion magazine's summer sports booklet. Le Tennis A l'Affiche np.

Weiner, Wien DESCRIPTION: On December 25, 1903, Maxime Lurion opened her Café Lurion, a coffee house to rival all other Viennese coffee houses—a tall order that she easily surpassed. The exquisitely decorated café not only boasted wonderful coffee and lounge areas, but a game room, an American bar, a bowling alley, and a winter garden that doubled as a concert hall. The Neues Wiener Tagblatt reported: “[The] coffee house... furnished with exquisite taste, elegance and dignified luxury, is a grand attraction of Vienna’s local art and industry; Viennese painters, sculptors, architects and arts and crafts enthusiasts were brought in to create a jewel case that not only adorns our city, but which every Viennese can look at with pride... Vienna has many fine coffee houses, but... Café Lurion has beaten an unmatched record” (Tagebuch der Strasse, p. 95). Opened in Vienna on the 25th of December, 1903, the Café Lurion was a sensation in a city renowned for her cafes. Elegantly designed, the venue was filled with paintings and sculptures by Viennese artists, a game room, an American Bar, a bowling alley, a winter garden and more. The local newspaper, Neue Wiener Tagblatt, opined on the opening, "Vienna has many beautiful coffee houses, but we will offend no one when we say ''Cafe Lurion has struck an unsurpassed chord''" (Tagebuch p 94). Ranzenhofer, who studied at the Vienna Academy, was one of the first artists to specialize in commercial advertising in Austria, and as such contributed greatly to the popularization of Jugenstil. As smoking became more and more prevalent, smoking accessories also became the subject of advertising; this "cigar ring pin" was basically a roach clip for men smoking in the office. Note the slight whiff of Art Nouveau stylization in the handling of the smoke and how the motif is reflected in the poster's borders. Denscher p. 138.
