ETHEL REED (1876-1912) MISS TRÄUMEREI. 1895. 22x13 3/4 inches, 56x35 cm. Lamson, Wolffe & Co., Boston. Condition B: water staining in margins, slightly into lower left image; creases and foxing in margins and image. Signed and dated by the artist in ink. Paper. From an early career as a book illustrator, Reed had a meteoric poster design career. In 1895 and 1896, Reed produced some 24 different posters, many of which achieved international acclaim. In May 1896, she went to Europe, designed one more poster, and then completely disappeared from public view. Her posters "favored female figures - if young girls, they are often knowingly naughty - frequently surrounded by either poppies or lilies, which to the fin-de-siècle mind were fraught with secret meanings" (Kiehl p. 191).Kiehl 235, DFP-I 417, Reims 1288, Virginia p. 88, Margolin p. 168, Keay p. 18, Gold 80.

Reed was born in Massachusetts and studied at the Cowles Art School in the 1890s. Her career was short but productive. SIZE: 13 7/8 x 22 in./35.2 x 56 cm PRINTER: Lamson, Wolffe, Boston DESCRIPTION: "Träumerei," or "dreaming," is one of Schumann's beautiful, romantic piano pieces comprising "Scenes from Childhood." Albert Morris Bagby's novel Miss Träumerei: A Weimar Idyl might have been set in Germany, but was written and published exclusively in America. The author is, in fact, better known as a musician than as a writer, having studied under Liszt during the late 1850s. Boston Sunday Herald, The/Ladies Want It/Feb. 24. 1895.Rogers, the British artist and critic, commented in 1901: "Judging by numbers, quality, and general excellence of her work, the name Ethel Reed will suggest itself as the foremost of present-day women posterists. Her success does not rest upon one or two works, but she can claim a long succession of clever designs, executed in a manner both versatile and convincing . . . Here we have a woman seeing things with women's eyes, and translating them into designs at once graceful, full of refined fancy, and exquisite colour" (p. 121). Case in point, this exquisite design for the Boston Sunday Herald, one that not only promotes a publication with a targeted female demographic, but one that reflects an image of women back to the viewer to which they can ideally identify-literate, intelligent and attractive. Who could ask for more? ETHEL REED (1876-?)

Miss Traeumerei. 1895.Since the "Taeumerei" ("Dreaming") of the advertised novel's title refers both to the title of Schumann's romantic piano piece and the heroine's penchant for daydreaming, Reed shows her at the piano in a contemplative mood. The flat areas of color in the design as well as the chrysanthemums jutting up diagonally in the foreground reflect the taste for Japanese style that was characteristic of the period. "The Poster" magazine of November, 1898, declared that "artistically refined people are in ecstasies with. . . 'Miss Traemerei,' a charming combination of black, pale cream and yellow" (p. 201). Boston Illustrated/The Best Guide to Boston. 1895.Reed, a native of Massachusetts, was a prolific book illustrator and cartoonist from the age of eighteen, and the author of some of the best American posters produced between 1895 and 1900. She then apparently married and left to live in England, regrettably disappearing from the poster scene. This advertisement for the "Best Guide to Boston," featuring some of the fairest attractions that the "Athens of America" has to offer, was the most expensive of her posters sold by Smith and Mecane in 1896, presented to the public for the exorbitant price of thirty-five cents. "In August 1895, Reed's design appeared in altered form, welcoming the triennial enclave of the Knights Templar. A knight on horseback replaced Reed's fashionably dressed young lady; the background of State House dome and Common trees remained the same" (Lauder, p. 164). ETHEL REED (1876-?)

22x14 inches. Lamson, Wolffe & Co., Boston. Condition A: minor darkening along edges. Paper. Reed's biography remains a mystery within the annals of the poster world. From an early career as a book illustrator, she had a meteoric poster design career, in 1895 and 1896, producing some 24 different posters, many of which achieved international acclaim. In May 1896 she went to Europe, designed one more poster, and then completely disappeared from public view. Her posters "favored female figures ?if young girls, they are often knowingly naughty? frequently surrounded by either poppies or lilies, which to the fin-de-siecle mind were fraught with secret meanings." (Kiehl p. 191). The inherent japonisme, composition and color of this book advertisement were such that in its time a critic declared, "artistically refined people are in ecstasies [over this poster.]" (S. C. de Soissons, The Poster, November, 1898). Her work was exclusively for Lamson, Wolfe & Co. Kiehl 235, DFP I 417, Reims 1288, Virginia p. 88, Maitres pl. 99, Maitres 1900 p. 118, Margolin p. 168, Keay p. 18, Gold 80.
