VICENTE DO REGO MONTEIRO (Brazil, 1899-1970). Untitled. 1938 Coloured pencil on paper. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Provenance: Fernández Guimaraes Collection (Portugal). Size: 29 x 21 cm; 47 x 39 cm (frame). Vicente Do Rego's figures bear a clear personal stamp, although they are forged on multiple influences: futurism and cubism, Brazilian indigenous art and the Art Deco that was contemporary to him. The figures in this composition show the mark left on his art by these currents, as well as Léger's post-Cubist style. Brazilian artist born in Recife into a bourgeois family of artists. In 1911 he moved to Paris to study at the Académie Julien. In 1913 he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants. In 1914 he returned to Brazil and became interested in popular music and dances. Between 1919 and 1921 he exhibits in Recife, Sao Paulo and Rio; the works in these exhibitions are watercolours and drawings on indigenous themes. Between 1921 and 1930 he lives again in Paris, collaborating with Léonce Rosenberg's prestigious gallery L'Effort Moderne, which brings together the group of purists led by Ozenfant. Towards the middle of the decade, he painted compositions with stylised and linked primitivist figures, so that the painting as a whole looked like a shallow relief; the paintings are almost monochrome, influenced by the Art Deco style; his influences are various (Futurism, Cubism, Japanese prints, Brazilian Baroque and above all the art of the Indians of the Marajó island). His work concentrated on religious themes and he took part in several Salons des Indépendants and the Tuileries. In 1923, he published Légendes, croyances et talismans des indians de L'Amazon and designed a theatrical adaptation of this work in the following years. In 1930 his work is present at the Première exhibition of Latin American artists organised by Torres-García at the Galerie Zack in Paris. That same year he brings to Brazil the first exhibition in that country of paintings by the School of Paris. He returned to Recife in 1932 and his house became the centre of the city's intellectual life. During the 1940s and 1950s he wrote poetry. Between 1946 and 1957 he returned to Paris. On his return to Brazil he is appointed professor at the Federal University of Pernambuco. Between 1965 and 1968 he taught at the Central Institute of Arts in Brasilia. He dies in Recife in 1970. The following year the Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of Sao Paulo dedicates a major retrospective exhibition to him.
