Rehberg. ad. viv. del. & fec.". At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "Auguste Stich_Düring. Mitglied des Königlichen Hoftheaters in Berlin geb. den 7. Octob. 1796 [sic!]. ". Date: 19th century Description: The history painter and portraitist Friedrich Rehberg is famous for his drawings of Lady Hamilton's attitudes, which were widely distributed as prints. The Mengs pupil spent his most productive years in Italy, where he not only contributed to the classicist art discourse with works inspired by David and received in Berlin, but also with critiques published in Germany. Around 1816, he returned to Berlin and Munich and turned to lithography. The portrait of Auguste Düring, who was born in 1795 (not 1796, as the caption says) and went down in theatre history as Auguste Crelinger after her second marriage, was possibly created in 1817 on the occasion of her marriage to Wilhelm Stich, who died in 1824. Rehberg did not, however, create a role portrait; he chose the oval portrait detail that had been popular since the 1780s in order to capture the Prussian actress engaged by Iffland in a play between closeness and distance, sensuality and immersion. The three-quarter view of the head emphasises the graceful effect of the veil and at the same time allows us to capture the unchanging features in the sense of contemporary physiognomics. Düring's gaze seems to be directed towards a mental object rather than a dialogue partner. Similar to Vigée-Lebrun in her self-portraits, which emphasised both professionalism and feminine ideality, Rehberg combines the youthful beauty of the sitter with a gaze pattern familiar from portraits of poets. Person: Depicted: Auguste Sophie Crelinger (1795 Berlin - 1865 Berlin) Widowed Stich, née Düring. German actress. Auguste Düring gained her first stage experience as a child with the Urania theatre company. On the occasion of one of these performances she also made the acquaintance of Princess Charlotte von Hardenberg (former actress Langenthal ). The latter turned to theatre director August Wilhelm Iffland for Düring and after her successful debut on 4 May 1812 as Margarete ("Die Hagestolzen") she was engaged and remained a member of the royal court theatre there until her last performance. Drawing, painting and the production of printed works were now to become a secondary occupation of Anton's, which he pursued throughout his life. With the present sheet, the German painter Friedrich Rehberg pays tribute to his artist colleague and close friend Pfaundler von Sternfeld with a last portrait, which was drawn after life but only reproduced lithographically after the death of the sitter.       Der blinde Seher Teiresias wird von seiner Tochter geführt. -- Schwarze Kreide auf festem Bütten. 69 x 58 cm im Oval. -- -- Rehberg studierte in Leipzig, Dresden und Rom, wo er bei Anton Raphael Mengs von 1777-79 arbeitete. Vermutlich war er in diesen Jahren ein enger Freund von Jacques-Louis David. Nach einem kurzen Aufenthalt in Deutschland kehrte Rehberg 1783 zurück nach Rom. Es sollten die erfolgreichsten Jahre seiner Karriere werden. Im Jahr 1805 sah er sich aufgrund der politischen Verhältnisse gezwungen, nach Berlin zurückzukehren. Die Tafeln zeigen Posen (Attitüden"), die verschiedenartigste Gemütszustände pantomimisch darstellen, was Emma Hamilton gerne den Gästen des Hauses vorführte und von Goethe in der "Italienischen Reise"beschrieben wurde. - Leicht fleckig und stockfleckig, die äußeren Ränder teils unwesentlich vergilbt, sonst in sehr guter Erhaltung. "
