      Mar. 24, 2019

      Mozart Rottmann, (Hungarian, 1874-ca. 1960), "The Talmudists", oil on canvas, 37" x 39-3/8", framed 48-1/8" x 50-1/2"

      Est: $60,000 - $90,000

Mozart Rottmann (Hungarian, 1874-ca. 1960) "The Talmudists" oil on canvas signed lower left, several inventory labels en verso. Framed. 37" x 39-3/8", framed 48-1/8" x 50-1/2" Provenance: Sotheby's, New York, April 25, 2006, lot 102; Private collection. Notes: Born into an artistic merchant-class family in Ungvar, Hungary (now a part of the Ukraine and known as Uzhorod) Mozart Rottman studied art and music in Budapest, Munich and Vienna. During World War II , separated from his family, he hid in the cellar of friends for over two years; he emerged to find his home destroyed and many of his family members - including his wife - dead. With the encouragement of two of his surviving brothers who had relocated to the United States, he eventually made his way to New York. This forced displacement likely influenced the artist's preferred subject matter. Rottman specialized in genre scenes of contemporary Jewish life, often revealing aspects of that life which were rarely depicted. In the carefully composed painting offered here - one of several by the artist exploring similar scenes of Talmudic study - scholars are seated around a book-laden table, discarded papers at their feet. The figures, with their intense, rapt expressions, are perhaps debating one of the finer points of the law. Reference: The Wilkes-Barre Record , 24 December 1948, p.20. NOTE Genre paintings such as the present lot celebrate the rituals of daily Jewish life. In The Talmudists, Rottmann employs an expressionistic approach to describe the Jewish milieu of his native Hungary. The result is an engaging composition depicting an intimate moment in religious life. Two men, dressed in Sabbath finery, are immersed in discussing a fine point of law, or perhaps the Torah portion of the week. The table at which they sit is piled high with books and a hat is placed on a tallith draped over a chair. A rabbi's portrait hangs on the wall next to a Hanukah lamp that is characteristic of the region. In the 19th century, Hungary witnessed a growth of Jewish painters born and trained there. Creative activity increased throughout the years and artists of merit and distinction made their mark on the artistic developments in Jewish art.

      MOZART ROTTMANN

      Est: $60,000 - $80,000

PROPERTY OF A PRIVATE COLLECTOR HUNGARIAN, B. 1874 THE TALMUDISTS measurements 37 by 39 ½ in. alternate measurements 94 by 100 cm signed ROTTMANN M (lower left) oil on canvas NOTE In The Talmudists, three men gather around a table as they take part in the Jewish tradition of biblical study. As the Sabbath comes to an end, symbolized by the burning Havdallah candle lit to end the Sabbath each week, these men are deep in debate as they discuss law, ethics, and rabbinical legends. In the background, a bronze Hanukkah lamp burns, reminding us of the holy oil lamp which burned for 8 days when the Temple of Solomon was destroyed. A Mizrach picture makes reference to Jerusalem, marking the eastern direction of the holy city. Mizrach, the word for East in Hebrew, reminds the Jews of the Temple and the sacred city, and is the direction to which they pray. The room is filled with lively conversation, apparent through the men's gestures towards one another. This fundamental source of legislation, customs, and morals is reflected through the warm atmosphere of soft glowing light and passionate discourse.
