Description: The painter, etcher, poet and art writer Johann Rudolf Schellenberg was a student of his father, the painter Johann Ulrich Schellenberg. A large number of portraits, genre scenes and landscapes were created by his hand, many of which are now in the possession of the Museum in Winterthur. His sensitive portraits enabled him to work on Lavater's physiognomic representations. A lively collaboration developed between Schellenberg and Chodowiecki, of which the correspondence between the two men is a fine testimony. Our portrait of a young woman sitting on a rock, only hinted at, captures the fragile grace of the 18th century. The matte blue of the paper, which is characteristic of that period, underlines the delicate beauty of the young woman.
