Bernhard Schneider German/American, 1843-1907 Artist by the Lake Signed Ber..ha...Schneider (lr) Oil on canvas 29 1/8 c 40 1/8 inches Provenance: Private collection Born in Germany, Schneider studied at the Munich Royal Academy and the Düsseldorf Art Academy before settling in Blasewitz, where he specialized in landscape. In 1885, he imigrated to Milwaukee to paint for the American Panorama Company. In the years that followed, working with such artists as August Lohr and Friedrich Wilhelm Heine, he depicted scenes from the Civil War and other dramatic historical and biblical images intended for this form of public entertainment. He also was active as a photographer. In 1889, Schneider moved to Cedarburg, north of Milwaukee, where he created tranquil scenes often featuring the Milwaukee River. As noted on the website of the Museum of Wisconsin Art: "His exquisite landscapes remain as some of the state's most obscure and underrated works of art." Artist by the Lake is among these images of restful contemplation. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC
