His exposure to the artistic tradition of Claude Lorrain first came through Jacob Philipp Hackert (1737–1807), a close associate of Goethe. It was precisely Schödlberger’s mastery in capturing the interplay of dawn and dusk within an atmospheric Mediterranean setting, as demonstrated in the present painting, that secured his place as one of the foremost Central European landscape painters of the first third of 19th century. Compared to his contemporaries in Central Europe, the classical influence shaping his idealised landscapes is particularly pronounced. In this painting, classical architectural elements — depicted with meticulous detail — guide the viewer’s gaze into a vast, illuminated landscape. Scattered sculptures and figures clad in ancient attire enhance the classical ambiance. While documentation confirms that he travelled to Rome in 1817–18, it is likely that he had visited the Eternal City prior to this period. His works were sought after by aristocratic patrons, including members of the Austrian imperial family. In 1822, the diplomat Anton Franz de Paula Count Lamberg-Sprinzenstein bequeathed eleven of Schödlberger’s paintings to the Art Gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. During the first quarter of the 19th century, his landscapes were among the most distinguished in the Academy’s annual exhibitions. Beyond his work as a painter, Schödlberger was also an art theorist; his manuscript Thoughts on Landscape Painting and Perspective is preserved in the collection of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.

In 1817/18 Schödlberger travelled to Italy. From then on he specialized on Italianate landscapes and motifs. He also created copies after Claude Lorrain und Jacob van Ruysdael in the Dresdener Gemäldegalerie. Ab 1801 studierte Johann Nepomuk Schödlberger an der Akademie der bildenden Künste in Wien und hielt ab 1816 als Protegé des Grafen Lamberg-Sprinzenstein Vorlesungen, u.a. über die "Ideen über die Landschaftsmahlerei und Perspective". Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller zählte zu seinen Schülern. Eine Italienreise 1817/18 beeinflusste Schödlbergers Schaffen nachhaltig. In der Folge entstanden ideale Landschaften und italienische bzw. italianisierende Motive. Des Weiteren kopierte der Maler in der Dresdener Galerie Gemälde von Claude Lorrain und Jacob van Ruysdael. Vor allem der Mal- und Kompositionsstil Lorrains war es aber, der ihn beeindruckte und in den meisten seiner Gemälde bestimmend wirkt. Schödlberger verband in seinen Arbeiten traditionelle Naturvorstellungen mit der idealen Sicht eines Claude Lorrain.

In this work, a panoramic landscape bathed in the warm light of the evening sun opens up before the viewer's eyes, as they are led by a tall rock formation with a round temple at its summit on the left, over gently rolling hills and rivers towards a large lake in the distance. The landscape is populated in the foreground by a group of figures in classical costume shown returning from the hunt with their dogs, spears, bows and birds, whilst an old man sits on the right edge of the work. Johann Nepomuk Schödlberger was born in Vienna in 1779. He learnt landscape painting during his sojourns to Italy and by studying the works of old masters such as Jacob van Ruisdael and Claude Lorrain. Both the composition with its bright, warm lighting as well as individual motifs such as the rocky waterfall (reminiscent of the landscape around Tivoli) and the mythological figures in the foreground clearly display the influence of the great French landscape painter. The figural group represents the goddess Diana and her retinue passing by the poet Homer as they return from the hunt.Schödlberger was famed for his classical Arcadian landscapes, and his patrons included Emperor Francis I and King Ludwig I of Bavaria. He began teaching at the Vienna Art Academy in 1816, where Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller was among his pupils.
