Oil on canvas, 1889, signed 'F. Schommer', dated and inscribed 'à M.G. Larroumet' lower left, lined. 16 x 21 1/4 in., 21 1/4 x 26 1/2 in. (frame). Note: This painting is inscribed to Gustave Larroumet (1852-1903), a French historian and professor at the Sorbonne who published extensively on academic subjects, including Napoleon, which may be why Schommer dedicated this work to him. The soldier depicted is a stylized Russian Army Cuirassier from circa 1812-1814. The artist has changed the color of the collars and the cuirasse, which should be black. This change in color may be related to the legend that the Pskovian, a Russian dragoon regiment, captured French Golden Cuirasses and wore their colors instead of those of the Russian regiment.
