S. 2587 (1/4). 4 volumes in-4 pleine percaline verte de l’éditeur, 223, 216, 226 et 225 pp. Très rare collection complète, référence fort méconnue parmi les premières éditions d’œuvres complètes de Chopin (Grabowski et Rink semblent l’ignorer). Le travail de gravure paraît pourtant remarquable. Exemplaire très frais intérieurement (à peine quelques annotations marginales tardives, rousseurs éparses), reliure très légèrement défraîchie mais indéniablement d’époque. Henri Frédéric Schopin (Français, 1804-1880) Paul et Virginie, 1845 Paul, 1847 Paire de toiles signées et datées. Haut. 65 Larg. 50 cm. (restaurations, petits manques) Dans de riches cadres en bois doré et sculpté de roseaux à vue cintrée en partie supérieure (Haut. 84 Larg. 68 cm). A pair of paintings by Henri Frédéric Schopin, one depicting Paul & Virginie (1845) and the other, Paul (1847), title characters of a novel by Bernardin de Saint-Pierre. In lavish carved giltwood frames. Henri Frédéric Schopin se forme dans l'atelier du Baron Antoine-Jean Gros (1771-1835) et obtient le Premier Prix de Rome en 1831. S'il est reconnu comme peintre d'Histoire, il excelle particulièrement dans les tableaux de genre inspirés de la littérature contemporaine, à l'instar de "Paul et Virginie", roman publié en 1787 par Bernardin de Saint-Pierre (1737-1814). Paul, assis, tient sur l'une de ces toiles la main de Virginie. Elle porte sa main droite sur le coeur et détourne le regard. Le livret du Salon de 1843 propose cet extrait pour commenter les numéros 1091 et 1092 présentés par Frederic Schopin : "Paul lui dit : Mademoiselle, vous partez ; mais, pour être plus heureuse, où pouvez-vous aller ? Comment vivrez-vous sans les caresses de votre mère ? Et moi, que deviendrai-je ! Il faut, répondit Virginie, que j'obéisse à mes parens, à mes devoirs. Ô Paul ! Ô Paul ! Tu m'es beaucoup plus cher qu'un frère". Le sujet est donc proche de notre thème, que Schopin prolonge donc ici deux ans plus tard. Les cimaises du Salon exposent encore, en 1857, une dernière représentation par l'artiste de ce roman avec "L'enfance de Paul et Virginie" (n°2419).

Il tema della corrida, affrontato nella nostra grande tela, è sempre stato molto caro agli artisti del'epoca, basta citare il celebre dipinto di Edouard Manet oggi al Musee d' Orsay a Parigi e un altro con lo stesso titolo nella collezione Frick di New York. La Corrida, considerata uno degli spettacoli più belli, curiosi e al contempo più terribili del mondo, offre all'artista Schopin la possibilità di esprimere le sue eccellenti qualità pittoriche. Avvalendosi di un colore brillante, una pennellata d'impressione, fatta di segni rapidi ma precisi che riescono a narrare la dinamicità e il vivo senso del movimento che anima l'impianto equilibrato della tela.
