      • Louis Marie de Schryver (French, 1862-1942), Flower Girl, Old Paris
        Mar. 13, 2021

Louis Marie de Schryver (French, 1862-1942), Flower Girl, Old Paris

        Est: $20,000 - $40,000

Louis Marie de Schryver (French, 1862-1942), Flower Girl, Old Paris oil on canvas (lined), signed and dated 1899 at lower right, presented in the likely original Louis XV style gilt composition frame with gallery plaque. Stretcher size 22 x 16 1/4 in.; Frame dimensions 34 x 28 in. Louis Marie de Schryver was one of the youngest artists to exhibit in the 19th century Salons, beginning at the precocious age of thirteen. His early still life paintings matured into fashionable scenes of contemporary Paris, with bright bouquets of flowers serving as catalysts of connection between the wealthy and working class. By the late 19th century, De Schryver was moving away from scenes of contemporary life to those of 18th century Paris. This redirection reflected the Rococo Revival taste of the Belle Époque. The present painting dates to the cusp of this transition. Flower Girl, Old Paris is a particularly intriguing composition. As with many of De Schryver’s genre paintings, it is a visual feast of technique and color. However, this painting calls for a more nuanced reading. Unlike many of his previous paintings, the flower seller is a fresh-faced young girl. While her clothing is of a more humble origin, fine pink silk heels and white stockings are visible below her raised hem. The woman wistfully gazing at the girl’s flower basket, richly attired in luminous silks and lace, appears caught between two worlds. In a way, all of these characters are caught in a perilously suspended moment of time. Their physical surroundings capture the great upheaval facing Paris in the late 18th and 19th centuries. A medieval half-timber building in the foreground makes way towards a wide boulevard lined by impressive Neoclassical edifices. The viewer cannot help but notice the street clock, looming above the entire vignette. Facing the dawn of a new century himself, these themes of change and transformation were especially relevant to De Schryver and his patrons. New York: A. F. Parsons Publishing Co., 1895, pp. 121-122. Notes: "The flowers, these divine apparitions of nature, are they not the true companions of these pretty women? How we must praise and be grateful to Mr. Schryver for having assembled fresh flowers, ravishing colors and young seductive women in the same canvas. One only knows which of the two to truly prefer. … They are so beautiful that one would gladly stop to offer them flowers. Mr. Schryver has lavished a pleasing perfume of taste and elegance on this piece that makes you view these two Parisian femme-du-mondes in turn as aristocrats." --Louis Enault review of "Les Premieres Fleurs" at the Paris Salon of 1887." As Enault's overwhelming praise of "Les Premieres Fleurs" demonstrates, this still-life of figural and floral beauties epitomizes the French Belle Epoque- a period of burgeoning wealth and leisurely pursuits. Paris at the turn of the century was the epicenter of commerce and opportunity. With the Industrial Revolution, came shops, theaters, cafes and bars, and the grand boulevards, designed by Baron Haussmann in the 1850s, to accommodate the flourishing economy. Young women and men from the provinces flocked to the city in pursuit of a brighter future. Women found work as au pairs or as saleswomen in the fashionable department stores and boutiques, and enjoyed a level of freedom from the social strictures imposed on wealthy "respectable" women, who seldom frequented public places without the companionship of men. Some of these women, like the ones pictured here with their fine dresses and hats, found fortune as actresses, courtesans, or by marrying well, while others fell into far more ignoble metiers, that fellow Impressionists Edouard Manet and Edgar Degas captured in bar room scenes. As Enault's review illustrates, Schryver focused instead on the opportunity the city offered by showcasing women, independent of their "true" social class, as models of Parisian fashion; their clothing, like the flowers they behold, are an arrangement of the finest specimens sold on the grand boulevards. As a true Impressionist, Schryver repainted the same scene multiple times, capturing the flower vendors and their patrons in various lights and times of day, on different boulevards that illustrated the architectural splendor of the city.

Louis Marie de Schryver, 1862 Paris - 1942 BLUMENVERKÄUFERIN IN PARIS VOR DER POPER Öl auf Leinwand. 50 x 65 cm Rechts unten signiert "Louis de Schryver". Gerahmt. Provenienz: Privatsammlung. (931782) Louis Marie de Schryver, 1862 Paris - 1942 GIRL FLOWER-SELLER IN PARIS Oil on canvas. 50 x 65 cm. Signed 'Louis de Schryver' at the bottom right.
