GUSTAVE SCHWARZ (c.1809 - c.1854). "St. Elizabeth of Hungary 24 years old on her deathbed", 1853. Oil on canvas.

      Est: €4,000 - €5,000

GUSTAVE SCHWARZ (c.1809 - c.1854). "St. Elizabeth of Hungary 24 years old on her deathbed", 1853. Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Presents Christie's label Size: 101 x 130 cm, 120 x 150 cm (frame). In the image, we see an interior scene in the room of a lady, on the bed, the one who is the owner of the rooms appears recumbent, with her whitish face like the sheets and almost her hair. In the rest of the room, four people, probably her relatives, suffer her loss. As for the composition and light of the image, it is undoubtedly reminiscent of tenebrism and Caravaggiesque painting, where the light emanates from a specific point, it does not have to be logical, and from there, the other lights and especially the shadows of the rest of the painting are governed. German painter born in Berlin in 1833. There he studied, taught and exhibited between 1859 and 1878. Then he emigrates to America with his wife and children and lives in Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina, where he works until his death in Buenos Aires. Isabel, at the age of four, is already engaged. Her father, King Andrew II of Hungary and Queen Gertrude, his wife, promised her in marriage to Ludovico, son and heir of the ruler of Hungary. At that time, she was taken to the kingdom of her future husband where she spent her childhood and adolescence. In 1217, Ermanno I, prince of the Empire, died in Hungary. He was succeeded by his son Ludovico, who solemnly married fourteen-year-old Elizabeth in 1221. She became "Isabella of Hungary". In 1222 her first son Ermanno was born, Sophia in 1224 and Gertrude in 1227. But this last one comes to the world already fatherless. Widowed at the age of twenty and with three children, Elizabeth receives back the dowry, and there are those who make plans for her: she can remarry, at that age, or enter a monastery like the other nuns, to live there as a nun, or even as a queen, this is suggested by her confessor. But she decides to set up a hospital for the sick and poor where she offers her whole life. She visits the sick twice a day and then offers help to all who need it. And all this while remaining a widow, a laywoman. After his death, the confessor will reveal that, during her husband's lifetime, she devoted herself to the sick, even the disgusting ones: "To some she fed, to others she provided a bed, to others she carried them on her shoulders, always doing everything possible, without thereby putting herself in conflict with her husband." She died in Marburg at the age of 24, called a saint many times, which led Pope Gregory IX to order an investigation into the wonders attributed to her. We arrive at her canonization in 1235 always by Pope Gregory.
