In 1789 he became the 123rd abbot of Shōfukuji, one of the oldest Zen temples in Japan. Gibon was renowned for his controversial teachings as much as his light-hearted ink paintings, often full of self-deprecating humour. He never considered his own works as serious art and was said to paint for anyone who requested it. Gibon spent his retirement at Genjū-an temple receiving guests, painting and teaching.

AN INK PAINTING BY SENGAI GIBON (1750-1837).

AN INK PAINTING BY SENGAI GIBON (1750-1837). Japan, 133x29 cm. Kakemono. Frog and banana tree. Sign., seal 'Sengai'. Box. SENGAI GIBON (1750-1837). Japan, 133x29 cm. Tusche auf Papier. Kakemono. Frosch und Bananenbaum. Sign. 'Sengai', Siegel 'Sengai'. Brokatmontierung. Beschrifteter Kiriholzkasten.
