        Est: £300 - £400

O'BRIEN WILLIAM SMITH: (1803-1864) Irish Nationalist, leader of the Young Ireland movement. A.L.S., William S. O'Brien, four pages, 8vo, Dromoland, County Clare, 3rd August 1856, to Miss. French. O'Brien thanks his correspondent for her kind letter of congratulations and explains that he proposes to visit Galway next week when he had hoped to meet Miss French and her brother, further expressing his disappointment at learning they won't be in Galway at the same time. O'Brien recalls the pleasure at having made French's brothers acquaintance in Florence and adds 'You may mention also to Baron French when you write to him that my son and I made a very satisfactory tour after we had seen him. We spent three weeks at Rome, ten days at Naples when we proceeded to Sicily and afterwards went to Greece. We spent three months in Greece and returned by way of Ancona, Bologna, Venice, Milan, the Splugenpass, Zurich, Basle, Manheim, Cologne, Bruxelles.' He concludes 'I send you a sprig of Shamrock (no longer present) which I gathered for you on the very spot on which the image of the Goddess (name indecipherable) was placed formerly in the celebrated Parthenon at Athens.' Some light overall creasing and minor foxing, G. O'Brien was convicted of sedition for his part in the Young Irelander Rebellion of 1848, but his sentence of death was commuted to deportation to Van Diemen's Land. In 1854 he was released on condition of exile from Ireland although in 1856, the year of the present letter, O'Brien was pardoned and returned to Ireland.
