Signed and dated lower right: Joh. Spilberg 9.6.49. Inscribed upper right: Aetatis 33.The Düsseldorf born painter Spilberg was recommended to Rubens in Antwerpen by Prince Elector Wolfgang Wilhelm von der Pfalz in 1640. However, since Rubens was already dead upon Spilberg's arrival, he travelled further to Amsterdam where he was apprenticed by Govaert Flinck. This portrait of a confident looking gentleman, who according to the inscription was 33 years old when he was portrayed in 1649, was probably made during this Amsterdam period. The following year, Spilberg was to paint his tour de force, the "schutterstuk" commissioned by the Amsterdam town council which still hangs in the city to this day.
