MARIA SPILSBURY TAYLOR IRISH, 1776-1820 A COUPLE IN AN INTERIOR BY AN OPEN WINDOW, 1812 Oil on canvas Lower left signed and dated: Maria Taylor 1812; verso auction label: 3 May 1985, 131 Catalogue note: Born in London in 1777, Maria Spilsbury Taylor moved to Ireland with her family in 1813. Her father, John Spilsbury, was an engraver, and it was in his studio that Maria trained. From 1792 to 1808, she exhibited her work, which ranged from portraiture to genre painting, at the Royal Academy in London, as well as at other venues. From the time of her arrival in Dublin, the artist exhibited her work with the Hibernian Society of Artists. The "Dictionary of Irish Artists" (1913) notes that in 1814, one critic commented how "Mrs Taylor's pictures exhibit a taste and delicacy of execution rarely to be met with." Thomas Kelly of Kellyville Athy, seated in his study, holding a bookOil on canvas, 48 x 36.5cmBorn in 1769 Thomas Kelly was the only son of Judge Thomas Kelly of Kellyville. Having initially intended to follow his father into the law he changed his mind taking holy orders in 1792. Ordained into the Church of England he returned to Ireland where he proved a popular evangelical preacher but soon fell out with Archbishop Fowler of Dublin who forbade him to preach in any church in the Dublin archdiocese. Kelly, in turn, established the Kellyites a fringe Anglican group much like the Plymouth Brethern or the Walkerites. Already a man of independent means, Kelly made an advantageous marriage to Ms Tighe of Rosanna which enabled him to establish meeting houses in Dublin, Athy, Portarlington, Wexford and Waterford. It is presumably through his wife that Rev. Kelly would have encountered Maria Spilsbury Taylor. She executed numerous commissions for the Tighes including portraits of various family members both at their home, Rosanna, in Co. Wicklow and their townhouse overlooking St Stephens Green in Dublin.Kelly became a prolific publisher of hymns with 765 extant. Many still feature in the standard Church of England and Ireland hymnals. Aged 85, he suffered a stroke while preaching and died the following year.

Maria Spilsbury (Taylor) (1777-c.1823) Mrs. Tighe, seated in the drawing room at Rossana beneath the bust of herself by Bartolini, with two of her grandchildren Oil on canvas, 44 x 35cm Sara Tighe was the daughter of Sir William Fownes and Elizabeth Ponsonby, and brought Woodstock into the Tighe family. Her devotion to Wesley and his fundamentalism, influenced her ideas on education. The bust by Bartolini and that of her husband are in a private collection, Co. Wicklow A version of this picture, was sold by James Adam and is illustrated in Kirwan, Reminiscences of Marianne-Caroline Hamilton (1777-1861).
