The current highest auction record for a similar painting by Gourlay Steell is more than €13,000 Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 6,000 Euro Condition: The painting shows some craquelure consistent with age, pressure marks from the stretcher, some paint losses and tiny stains. The paint surface is slightly discolored. There is a major paint loss to the lower part. The paint surface has minimally lifted to the upper right (5 cm). The inspection under UV light reveals major areas of retouching to the upper right. The frame is minimally worn. The dimensions of the painting are 86 x 112 cm, and the wooden frame measures 105 x 128.5 cm. Gourlay Steell (1819-1894) Born in Edinburgh, Gourlay Steell first studied with his father, like his brother, the sculptor John Steell, and then under the guidance of William Allan and Robert Scott Lauder. He first created drawings for book illustrations and taught modeling for a time at the Watt Institute. He modeled numerous animals, which were cast poured in silver. He exhibited his paintings several times at the Royal Scottish Academy. In addition to animal depictions, Steell painted numerous hunting and equestrian motifs. In his later years, he created large animal studies. In 1872, Steell was appointed Scottish animal painter to the Queen. In 1882, he became curator of the National Gallery of Scotland.
