Artist: BERND STEINER (1884-1933) Size: 25 7/8 x 35 1/4 in./65.6 x 89.6 cm H. Boesking, Bremen In "the last good year" of 1913, before the world had changed utterly, Steiner heralded an art exhibition in Bremen with a simple, resonant image: a three-masted sailing ship alluding to Bremen's status as a Free City of the Hanseatic League. The poster's typography quotes directly from Vienna Secession style, and the two elements put together strongly suggest a statement of artistic independence from the Kaiser's militarism. Oil on cardboard Vienna, Austria, 1920 Bernd Steiner (1884-1933) – Austrian illustrator, painter and stage designer Signed lower right “B. STEINER“ Verso signed, inscribed and dated “Bernd Steiner Wien; Ritterhude 1920“ A charming depiction of a typical farmstead in North Germany Overall dimensions, framed: 76 x 96 cm Very good condition The present painting is a beautiful work by the Austrian painter Bernd Steiner who executed it in 1920. According to the inscription “Ritterhude“ on the verso, he depicted a North German farmstead with typical stables in half-timbered style. It would be interesting to know whether it still exists today. The painting is in very good condition considering its age. It is signed lower right “B. STEINER“. Verso, it is additionally signed and inscribed “Bern Steiner Wien“, as well as inscribed and dated “Ritterhude 1920“. Besides, there is a label fixed onto the back side, indicating an art gallery in Cologne. The frame was presumably built in Dusseldorf and seems to be the original one. It shows small traces of age and use. The framed work measures 76 x 96 cm. The cardboard measures 50 x 80 cm. (cbo) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance. BERND STEINER (1884-1933) Wiener Mode. Using 18th-Century couture to promote contemporary chic may seem a bit counterproductive. However, in Steiner's capable hands, this triumvirate of well-bustled women create magnetic commercial potential for the 'Viennese Fashion' magazine, putting forth the timeless notion that comportment is just as vital as the clothes one wears. Steiner was for a time the art director for Bremen's City Theater and in 1919 began doing posters for Motor magazine and became the house graphic designer for Norddeutscher Lloyd in the 1920s. He died in Vienna in 1933. Gesellschaft fur Graphische Industrie, Wien

BERND STEINER (1884-1933) NORDDEUTSCHER LLOYD BREMEN. Circa 1930. 39x27 inches.

    Est: $1,200 - $1,800

BERND STEINER (1884-1933) NORDDEUTSCHER LLOYD BREMEN. Circa 1930. 39x27 3/4 inches. Condition B+: repaired tears and restored minor losses in margins and image. Filling up almost the entire image, the mighty Bremen is shown at dockside with passengers and freight being loaded on board. In order to emphasize her size, 938 feet long and 102 feet high, Steiner depicts a car being hoisted onto the ship to put it into perspective. While the Europa was officially the Bremen's sister ship, the Columbus was a much smaller ship that had been refitted with shorter funnels, giving it a similar appearance to the other two ships. Steiner was the in-house graphic designer for the shipping company and designed many posters for Norddeutscher Lloyd.
