    JAN ŠTURSA 1880 - 1925 - WOUNDED

    Est: -

The iconic statue was created during the end of First World War, it stands on a pedestal made of Slivenec marble. The final form of the statue was undergoing the process of creation for several years. It was very difficult to find the persuasiveness of the diagonal fall of the body, which was anchored to the ground only with the fingertips. The balance of the composition was then achieved by a helical bend of the body, which was projected into the movements of the arms and the bowed head. Jan Štursa initially attended the sculpture and stonemasonry school in Hořice, but in 1899 enrolled at the Academy of Art in Prague. His early work is marked by elements of Art Nouveau symbolism. Signed: signed on the plinth: J. ŠTURSA

    Est: -

technique: patinated bronze on a wooden base | 16cm (24cm) | signature: marked STURSA Lot description Sculptor Jan Stursa created a bronze bust of actress Hana Kvapilova, an important figure in Czech theater life at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. This bronze sculpture is an artistic expression of a realistic portrait, characteristic of Sturs' work, which captures both the physical form and the inner depth of the personality. Sturs' work stands out for its detailed rendering, which reflects the artist's ability to breathe life and emotion into bronze. The bust of Hana Kvapilova is one of the key examples of Czech sculpture of the first half of the 20th century.

    JAN STURSA (Czech / Bohemian 1880 - 1925) - Melancholic girl

    Est: -

technique: patinated plaster, made by UM. P PRAGUE NUSLE | 21 cm | signature: unmarked | condtion: patina damaged Lot description This sculpture of the Melancholy Girl by the leading Czech sculptor Jan Stursa embodies the subtle expression of melancholy and inner introspection, typical of his work from the beginning of the 20th century. Stursa, one of the key representatives of Czech modernism, focused in his work on the depiction of human emotions and the subtle beauty of the female body. The sculpture expresses his masterful command of the material and his ability to capture the psychological dimension of the figure in a harmonious, compact form. The girl's melancholic expression, fine lines and graceful pose reflect the influence of Symbolist and Art Nouveau tendencies in European art of the time. Sturs' works remain a significant contribution to European sculpture, and the Melancholic Girl is a great example of his creative genius and the timelessness of his style.

    JAN ŠTURSA 1880 - 1925 - WINNER

    Est: -

The sculpture of the Winner by one of the most important Czech sculptors was originally part of the monument to the famous writer Svatopluk Čech (1846-1908), realized in 1918-1921. The statue glorifies the establishment of independent Czechoslovakia in the form of a small figure of a boy with a laurel branch. Thanks to this work and also thanks to the sculpture of the Wounded (it stood in the seat of the Parliament and President Masaryk took his oaths under it), Štursa was written and spoken of as "the poet and sculptor of youth". Šturso's Winner has two large-scale realisations, in front of Gočár's building of the J. K. Tyl Grammar School in Hradec Králové and in front of the Renaissance Queen Anne's Summerhouse in Prague. JAN ŠTURSA 1880 - 1925 - GIFT OF HEAVEN AND EARTH

    Est: -

The small sculpture is a variant of a larger-than-life bronze statue created by the author in 1918 after his return from the war. There are several other versions and studies that Štursa worked on in 1917-18, which were exhibited at the Exhibition of Jan Štursa's Life's Work, organised in 1950 by the Mánes Society. The work is regarded as an example of the new classicism in modern Czech sculpture and stands out in the context of the artist's work for its form emphasising the lyricism of the nude. Compared to his earlier work, we observe a certain de-emphasis and lightening of form with an emphasis on the inner charge. Signed: signed on the print: STURSA

    JAN ŠTURSA 1880 - 1925 - BEFORE THE BATH

    Est: -

One of Jan Stursa's most important sculptures, Before the Bath, can rightly be described as the "sister of the Melancholic Girl". The nude of the kneeling girl, holding a stream of hair with her left hand, is inscribed in an imaginary block of stone, or in the case of the offered work, in sandstone, which becomes a direct part of the composition. The author depicts the girl's nude as a subject in the mode of a nostalgic image of youth, a position familiar to Stursa from the period of his work 1880-1906. The sculpture Before the Bath closes this (melancholic) chapter, while the forthcoming work is characterised by a new sensualism and Dionysian joy. The work on offer presents a unique execution in sandstone, which was most likely a variant before the work was carved in white Laotian marble. Signed: signed lower right: ŠTURSA

    JAN ŠTURSA 1880 - 1925 - A MAN PLAYING NINERA

    Est: -

Štursa's work reflects the moods of the time, from the melancholy of the turn of the century with echoes of Art Nouveau, through vitalism and fascination with Gauguin's primitivism, the traumatic experiences of the First World War, to the celebration of the freedom gained and the establishment of an independent Czechoslovakia. The sculpture on offer foreshadowed the aesthetics of civilism. Jan Štursa essentially did not abandon the basic starting point of his mature work: the search for a spiritual conception of sensual form in direct contact with perceived reality, which in the post-war period reached the position of harmonic modelling. Jan Štursa first studied at the sculpture and stone school in Hořice and from 1899 attended the Prague Academy. The rarely offered sculpture is in the collections of the National Gallery in Prague. BŘETISLAV BENDA 1897 - 1983 - IN A BATH

    Est: -

During the bath, the girl expresses the very essence of fragility - completely alone, undressed and completely unprepared for a potential observer. It is an act so fleeting and full of tension that he could not go unanswered in art. From the position of an artist, the depiction of such an act represents the revelation of the veil of secrecy of female beauty and the entry into the fragile taboo zone. Břetislav Benda accentuated this impression with a delicate carving in shimmering Carrara marble. The author of the sculpture Břetislav Benda graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and was a student of J. V. Myslbek and Jan Štursa. During his life, he created an extensive work of more than a hundred sculptures, and the main theme that Benda dealt with was the female figure, especially in the form of an act. Benda himself adds: “I don't know a motif more beautiful than a woman in all her variations, an inexhaustible subject for a sculptor. With my sculptures I want to express the infinite beauty of the human body, but also other feelings. ”The work comes from the estate of Břetislav Benda.
