        ▲ Stuart Sutcliffe (1940-1962) 'Abstract No. 85' with a certificate of authenticity label from the artist's sister verso, mixed media 42 x 60cm Provenance: Purchased by Sir John Moores from the artist's widow, Astrid; Phillips, New Bond Street, 'Modern British and Irish Paintings, Drawings & Sculpture', 7 March 1985, lot 29; Provenance: The David and Pam McCleave Collection of Modern British Art. Exhibited: Hamburg, 1961; the Walker Gallery, Liverpool, 1964; the Neptune Gallery, Liverpool, 1969. Often referred to as the 'Fifth Beatle', Stuart Sutcliffe was the original bass player in The Beatles. He left the band to pursue his love of art in 1961, but sadly died from a brain haemorrhage in 1962 at the age of just 21. Condition Report: Framed: 82.5 x 63.5cm Light cockling. Appears to be in otherwise good condition.

        Original double-sided sheet of sketches from Stuart Sutcliffe - the original Beatles bassist Stuart Sutcliffe (1940-1962), often referred to as "The Fifth Beatle" (among others) was the original bassist for The Beatles. As the band played in Hamburg, he famously met the noted photographer Astrid Kirchherr, and dediced to enroll in the Hamburg College of Art, quitting the band to pursue a career as an artist. While studying in Hamburg, Sutcliffe began experienceing sever headaches, and in 1962 he tragically died from an aneurysm. These original unsigned sketches by Sutcliffe occupy an 8" x 10.5" sheet from a sketchbook. There are four separate images in total covering both sides of an off white page. The beautiful drawings, which are in fine condition, come with a letter of provenance which states how the sketchbook was the property of the Sutcliffe estate until it was sold in 2003 at a Bonhams auction. A wonderful piece from the artist, suggesting that his career as an artist may have been as successful as The Beatles' as musicians.

Stuart Sutcliffe left The Beatles in 1961 and studied at the Hamburg College of Art under the direction of Edwardo Paolozzi. This work was painted when Sutcliffe was at Liverpool College of Art and was purchased directly from the family.

        1041. STUART SUTCLIFFE (1940-1962) The first electric bass player for the Quarry Men, later The Beatles. He fell in love with photographer Astrid Lirchnerr during a tour through Hamburg. He left the group to settle there, and tragically died shortly thereafter from a brain hemorrhage. A.Q. (unsigned) 1p. large 4to., [n.p., n.d., likely Hamburg, ca. 1962], a full page of lyrics from the song "Sure Fire Bet", written by Gene Pitney for Ricky Nelson, all in Sutcliffe's hand. Dampstained at left side only slightly detracting, a marginal tear at bottom, else generally very good.            $800 - 1,000
