      Circle of Betty Swanwick (1915-1989) The miracle of the loaves and fishes pencil on paper, stamped ESH (lower left), 55 x 41.5 cm, framed and glazed 68 x 55 cm. Taped to mount verso. The sheet is undulation throughout. There are several soft creases, mainly visible to the lower sheet area but also elsewhere. There is a brown stain visible, upper left, and a few further spots of brown to the left side. Spots of surface dirt and minot foxing. Light acidification to the sheet.

      Original vintage London Transport poster advertising the Smithfield Club Cattle Show that took place between December 7-11 1936 at The Royal Agricultural Hall - Design by Ada Elizabeth Edith Swanwick (1915-1989), known as Betty Swanwick features two prize winning horned cows named Hyacinth and George wearing rosettes and sticking their tongues out. London transport logo in bottom right corner. The Smithfield Club Cattle Show was an annual British agricultural show founded in 1799 and was first held at Wootton's Livery Stables in Dolphin Yard, Smithfield, London. The last show was held in 2004 and was the last major livestock show in London. Good condition, creasing, pinholes, minor staining. Colourful design featuring fun illustrations by the English artist Betty Swanwick (Ada Elizabeth Edith Swanwick; 1915-1989) depicting scenes along the River Thames including fish and a fisherman, children enjoying a picnic and feeding swans, an elephant being transported on the docks, people on boats and a mermaid, between poetic text describing the river: "The Thames is more than London's sea road to the world. It brings to the Londoner the ageless conspiracy of sun and water against worry. It adds white gulls to the view of St. Paul's. It offers him ships to watch on the tideway and boats to steer under the willows. It is a high road to summer pleasure..." with a list of buses and London Underground stations located near various points of interest by the Thames, the London Underground roundel logo below. Betty Swanwick was born in Forest Hill, the daughter of the artist, Henry Gerard Swanwick, who encouraged her to draw from an early age. She studied under Edward Bawden at Goldsmiths College before going on to the RCA, and then returning to teach at Goldsmiths from 1948 to 1961. She became a highly successful illustrator and poster artist, as well as painter. She was elected an RA in 1979.
