      Attributed to Jan Swart Van Groningen (Dutch c.1500-c.1560) A hermit, possibly St Jerome, in a landscape, his hand resting on a skull oil on oak panel, 29.5 x 24.5 cm, in a typical moulded Dutch frame, 53 x 47 cm The attribution is due to Max Friedlander in 1948. Provenance Kunsthandel Leo Blumenreich, Berlin, c. 1928 (as per RKD). Hans W. Lange, Berlin, auction 6-7 December 1937 (consignor H.E. von Scheven, Potsdam). Literature 'Zu Jan Swart van Groningen', Oud Holland, 63 (1948) p. 6, no. 2, reproduced fig. 4. Slight warping of the panel evident. Fine craquelure throughout the surface, leading to some slight blistering of the surface, particularly in the sky. Small area of paintloss on the skull. Some deposits to the painted surface.

      DIE APOKALYPSE DES JOHANNES - FOLGE VON 14 ZEICHNUNGEN Tusche auf Papier, teilweise laviert. 28,5 / 29,5 x 20,5 / 21 cm. In hochovalen Kartuschen die ausdrucksstarken 14 Darstellungen aus der Apokalypse des Johannes. Die Ränder meist gestaucht, geknickt, mit kleineren Einrissen und tlw. mit Japanpapier an das Passepartout montiert. Folgende Szenen sind dargestellt: 1: Johannes erblickt die sieben Leuchter 2: Johannes vor Gott und den Ältesten 3: Die Eröffnung des sechsten Siegels 4: Die Posaunenengel 5: Der zweite Engel blies in seine Posaune 6: Der dritte Engel blies in seine Posaune und ein Stern fiel 7: Johannes verschlingt das Buch 8: Die beiden Zeugen 9: Der Kampf Michaels mit dem Drachen 10: Das Sonnenweib und der siebenköpfige Drache 11: Die Ernte der vier Engel 12: Die sieben Plagen 13: Klagen über Babylon 14: Das jüngste Gericht Die Darstellungen finden Ihren Ursprung zumindest teilweise in dem Holzschnittzyklus des Albrecht Dürer (Die Apokalypse, um 1497 / 98).
