Incredibly Rare Zachary Taylor Free Frank as President

            Est: $1,000 - $1,200

Zachary Taylor n.p., n.d. Incredibly Rare Zachary Taylor Free Frank as President Free Frank A very rare and desirable piece from the Presidency of Zachary Taylor: a bold franking signature executed on the top right corner of a postal cover measuring 5.5" x 3.5". Addressed in another hand to Epenetus Wheeler in New York, no date. Light, expected soiling, otherwise very in good condition. Given his short 16-month tenure in the White House, presidential autographs by Taylor are especially scarce, especially in franking signature format. Zachary Taylor (1784-1850) gained fame as a national hero for his service in the Mexican-American war. Although he didn't have clearly outlined political views, he was still elected as the 12th president of the United States. He died just sixteen months into his first term, serving from March 1849 to July 1850. This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses. Political "Zachary Taylor President of the United States" Snuff Box c. 1850 Historic "ZACHARY TAYLOR PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES" Legend, Decorative Color Bust Portrait Snuffbox, Very Fine. Zachary Taylor (1784-1850). 12th President of the United States (1849-1850). Taylor was a historic American military leader who ran as a Whig in the 1848 Presidential election, defeating Lewis Cass, Presidential term: March 4, 1849 - July 9, 1850. Taylor was the last President to hold Slaves while in office, and the last "Whig" Party member to win a Presidential election. Original round Commemorative Snuffbox, having a color central Bust Portrait of an older Zachary Taylor facing left in his civilian dresscoat. It is printed in black upon a bright golden-coppery reflective background, measuring 3" in diameter and .5" high. The text of the Legend surrounding the top of the portrait reads, "Zachary Taylor President of the United States". A vintage paper label on the flat bottom apparently has what appears to be a doctor's instructions, and reads: "Catarrh Snuff take a small pinch 2 to 5 times in day. R. H." There is some overall wear, particularly on the top edges from handling, and use and some age crackulature to the top surface paint. Overall, a very collectible snuff box that is quite rare. Known as "Old Rough and Ready," Taylor had a forty-year military career in the United States Army, serving in the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War, and the Second Seminole War. He achieved fame leading American troops to victory in the Battle of Palo Alto and the Battle of Monterrey during the Mexican-American War. As President, Taylor angered many Southerners by taking a moderate stance on the issue of slavery. He urged settlers in New Mexico and California to bypass the territorial stage and draft constitutions for statehood, setting the stage for the Compromise of 1850. Taylor died just 16 months into his term, the third shortest tenure of any President. He is thought to have died of gastroenteritis. Only Presidents William Henry Harrison and James Garfield served less time.

Davignon from a daguerreotype by Brady, on the original large mount with Taylor's printed signature. An 1849 copyright by Brady and D'Avignon is printed beneath the 11 x 9 ½ - inch oval image. The image is in a 12 ½ x 10 5/8 rectangle on a 21 ½ x15 ¾-inch sheet. D'Avignon's 323 Broadway address in imprinted on the sheet, and beneath it is an embossed stamp for "Brady and D'Avignon/ Proprietors, New York." This is a rare opportunity to acquire a major example from this important publication. There is a very light overall water stain that does not show up until the bottom of the large sheet, where it becomes quite noticeable. It may respond favorably to professional treatment.

We believe the raised floral design is likely molded gesso work, stained and varnished. The portrait was probably made by applying a transfer on the underside of a glass plate then adding painted highlights. These were made in France for the American market in the 1848-1849 period. Very attractive and in excellent condition.

            Zachary Taylor: Iconic Campaign Poster.

            Est: $1,000 - $1,500

Zachary Taylor: Iconic Campaign Poster. 17 1/2" x 12 3/4" lithograph on paper, printed in brown and black, titled "Taylor". An American eagle flies overhead grasping lightning bolts with a sunburst and constellation of stars above the clouds. The letters of the name Taylor are populated with soldiers, fortifications and battle scenes, along with the list of casualties on both sides for six different battles the victorious general participated in. Probably the most graphic of 19th century political posters or prints. What makes this even more remarkable is the line of ownership. It belonged to Zachary Taylor and descended in his family, as documented in an accompanying Letter of Provenance from the consignor, a direct descendent of Taylor. It has recently undergone restoration and is mounted on mulberry paper. There are some folds, creases and areas of minor loss, but they did a fine job and it displays quite nicely.

The Hero of the War with Mexico. Genl. Zachs. Taylor". An eagle and shield appear at top. The same portrait and slogan appears on snuff boxes, but this is the first stogie case we have seen with that design. Most stogie cases with Taylor are Mexican War themed. This example, perhaps unique, has the front, the back and the embossed leather insert. It lacks the folded leather "wings" that hold the covers together. Still, it has the "essentials" and displays beautifully!

ZACHARY TAYLOR (1784-1850) Twelfth President of the United States, "Old Rough and Ready" was also a hero of the Mexican War, taking Monterrey and defeating Santa Anna. L.S. "Z. Taylor" 1p. 4to., Baton Rouge, July 19, 1848, marked "Private"to William N. Hunnewell of Boston, saying that he has no ambition to be president, but expressing his goal, if called upon, to overcome the divisiveness rending the antebellum United States asunder. He writes, in full: "I have the pleasure to receive your very fine congratulatory favor of the 28th ulto and I thank you most truly for your good opinion, which, whether elected or not, whether in an exalted or humble sphere, I hope to merit. The office of the Presidency is not desirable to me farther than as it is in the wish and will of the people, and it is this far before any other consideration which has disposed me to yield to the movement in my favor. You are right in saying that the emolument of the office is small, and if, in case I should be elected, I could retire from office without being bankrupt, and yet more if I can be instrumental in moderating to some extent the bitterness of party and political asperity, I should consider myself more than fortunate." In 1848, the Whigs sought a candidate that would have national appeal and fixed their attention on Taylor. They looked to him because his long military record would appeal to northerners, while his ownership of slaves would lure southern votes. The potential candidate, however, was not enthused about running and would only accept the nomination if he was convinced it was at the call of the country. On June 9, the Whig convention made that call and nominated him. Taylor's campaign reflected his insistence that principle would prevail over politics, and his intention to seek sectional reconciliation on a national basis rather than favor any particular region. As his biographer K. Jack Bauer states, "Taylor viewed himself as a non-partisan figure attracting support from all parties." His Democratic opponent, Lewis Cass, favored letting the residents of territories decide for themselves whether they wanted slavery, which in practice was a pro-southern position. Usual folds, integral address panel expertly laid in to a larger sheet, else fine condition with a dark, bold signature.
