      Thier, Barend Hendrik (1743-1811). (The gloating goat). Etching, 13,4x13,4 cm., signed "BH Thier f 1780" in the plate. - TIPPED on mount together with: Idem. (Sheep and kid goat heads). Four etchings, each 13,5x13,5 cm., 1x signed "B.H. Thier 1777" in the plate, numb. "1" to "4". = Rare. Complete series. The artist came originally from Germany, named Bernhard Heinrich, as an apprentice glazier. The original design for the heads of the sheep and kid goats are in the collection of the Rijksmuseum. According to annotation on mount, from the collection of churchmaster of Leyden Isaac van Buren (friend and benefactor of the artist) and tipped on this mount by him. His collection was sold in 1808.

Thier fec. 1798". -- -- Der Maler und Radierer Barent Hendrik Thier war Schüler von Pieter Barbiers und Hendrik Meijer. Er machte sich als Blumen- und Landschaftsmaler einen Namen und war darüber hinaus auch ein produktiver Zeichner. Zeichnungen seiner Hand befinden sich im Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam, im Gemeentemuseum, Delft und im Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam. -- -- - Wir bitten darum, Zustandsberichte zu den Losen zu erfragen, da der Erhaltungszustand nur in Ausnahmefällen im Katalog angegeben ist. -- - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

      A landscape with a shepherd overlooking a river, a cow, sheep and horses nearby signed and dated 'B:H:Thier f1779' (lower left) oil on panel 29.4 x 39.1 cm. NOTES The artist began his career as a painter of wallpapers in Amsterdam and Haarlem. He subsequently moved to Leeuwarden, The Hague and Leiden, where he specialised in flower still lifes and landscapes, such as the present lot (see R. van Eijnden and A. van der Willigen, Geschiedenis der Vaderlandsche Schilderkunst, II, 1817, p. 372).
