(Graz 1888–1949 New York) “Dame im Garten (Thea)” / Lady in the park (Thea), 1936/37, oil on canvas on hardboard, 44 x 31 cm, framed Provenance: Galerie Welz, Salzburg, 1977 Private Collection, Austria (since the late 1970s) Registered and illustrated in: Im Sog der Moderne, Neue Galerie Graz, 2013, full-page colour ill. plate 146, cat. rais. no. 340 (with title) The Parisian years from 1931 to 1938 are among the happiest and artistically most fruitful years in the life and oeuvre of the Austrian painter Wilhelm Thöny. During this time he developed a new type of full-figure portrait which was both a continuation and reinterpretation of Impressionist stylistic devices. In 1936/37 he completed three paintings with the motif "Lady in the Garden" (cat. rais. no. 339–341), in which the shadowy facial features lend the figures a sense of ideal femininity. The present painting can nevertheless be identified by the sitter's dark hair as a portrait of Thöny’s second wife Thea Thöny (née Herrmann), an American with Jewish roots, whom he married in 1938. This picture gains a remarkable surreal liveliness from the contrast of the dynamic and shimmering blue and green tones, charmingly accentuated with red spots; it gains a sovereign elegance from the pure modelling from a mesh of colours. “Nothing can deceive like a photo, truth is a matter of the heart, achievable only through art.” Franz Kafka

Thöny Provenance: Fine Arts Kohlhammer and Mahringer, auction house at Kinsky, private property ESTIMATE € 25.000 - 45.000 Austrian painter, graphic artist, etcher and illustrator of the 20th century, important representative of Austrian modernism. 1908 to 1912 studied at the Academy of Fine Arts with Angelo Jank and Gabriel von Hackl. Also training in singing and playing the piano. Co-founder of the Munich Secession, lifelong acquaintance with Alfred Kubin. As a one-year volunteer in World War I, he created portrait studies and illustrations as a regimental painter. 1923 co-founder of the Graz Secession. 1925 Marries Thea Herrmann-Trautner, daughter of the American painter Frank S. Diverse themes and techniques, landscapes and above all cityscapes of large cities such as Paris and New York. The genre scenes also show engagement with Advard Munch and August Macke. At the end of the 1920s, Thöny experienced a period of upheaval, both in terms of his private life and his professional career. After the failure of his marriage to the American Fanny Hilma Walbourg White, he met another American in 1925: the daughter of the painter Frank Herrmann, Thea Trautner, who would later become his second wife. In 1927, Thöny worked for the Munich magazine "Die Jugend" and the Berlin magazine "Cross Section". After receiving the title of professor from the Austrian Federal President in July 1929, he and his wife traveled to Paris for a few weeks in September. A year later he was honored by the Austrian federal government with an honorary state award and at the same time became a full member of the Vienna, Prague and New Munich Secessions. In 1931, Thöny decided to move to Paris with his American wife Thea Herrmann-Trautner. In his cityscapes of the French metropolis, which he created as drawings, watercolors or oil paintings, his artistic sense for the atmospheric is sharpened and his delving into the hallucinatory and visionary is part of his unmistakable pictorial language. In Thöny's Paris cityscape, bathed in nocturnal blue, we see the Paris City Hall from an elevated position on the other bank of the Seine, probably from a window of a building on the Quais de Bourbon or the Place Louis Aragon. The painting shows references to abstract expressionism due to its web of coarse, erratic strokes and dabs of paint, from which rhythms and structures are formed. But Thöny was also fascinated by the observation of the most diverse social classes and everyday events. He kept in touch with his circle of friends at home: Thöny liked to correspond and corresponded a lot because he wanted to share his experiences with the friends he had left behind in Graz, especially during those years in Paris. To this end he often provided these letters with delightful marginal drawings for better illustration. Sometimes, with the same intention, he enclosed drawings the size of a letterhead with his letters, which is still remembered today by the creases in the paper of these drawings. In 1938, Thöny felt so unsettled by the political developments that he and his second wife, American Thea Trautner, moved to New York in March 1938. Diverse themes and techniques, landscapes and above all cityscapes of large cities such as Paris and New York. The genre scenes also show engagement with Advard Munch and August Macke. Wilhelm Thöny occupies a prominent position in Austrian modernism of the interwar period. Coming from the Styrian capital of Graz, which was artistically overshadowed by Vienna at the time, Thöny did not go to Vienna in 1908 to study art – like many of his artist colleagues – but to the more progressive Munich. At this point in time, his inclinations were initially divided equally between music and painting, and he was still undecided as to which of the two arts he wanted to devote himself to. It was only when Thöny received an offer as a singer that he decided against music and concentrated on his career as an aspiring visual artist. After a stay in Switzerland, Wilhelm Thöny returned to Graz in 1923, where he founded the Graz Secession together with Alfred Wickenburg, Fritz Silberbauer and Axel Leskoschek, of which he became the first president. The paintings and watercolors of the post-war period are shaped by the experiences of the war and influenced by a gloom that is expressed in melancholy colors determined by dark paints. At the same time, Thöny was also a man of society. He regularly attended the theatre, the opera and concerts and watched the actors and musicians with passion. Against this background, it is not surprising that he produced three pictures for the Thalia theater café in Graz at exactly the same time, in the year of his arrival in Graz. The two sibling pictures are in collections of museums and represent drama and opera. Poetry, music and painting are symbolized in this piece. In front of a plain blue background, framed by fruit-bearing plants, the figures of poetry and drama as well as music and painting sit and stand side by side. The figures are positioned on a pedestal, with Thöny giving the most important place to the art of acting. In the embodiment of an elegantly dressed lady with fiery red hair, she stands on the highest level. She is inclined towards the poet or an actor who has put one foot on the podium and is reciting from the page, bent over. The sitter is probably Herbert Thöny, Wilhelm's brother, who was a successful baritone at the Graz Opera. The violinist on the showwoman's right is engrossed in his playing, his face hidden by the brim of his deep-drawn hat. He provides the musical accompaniment to the scene and remains anonymous. Finally, the art of painting is embodied on the right edge of the picture. It is a self-portrait by Thöny that shows him standing upright with a concentrated gaze. In a self-confident pose he stands in front of the easel and captures the depiction. In terms of colour, Thöny limits the painting to five colors and emphasizes important details with a well-considered color scheme. All too often the term major work is used to praise a painting. This is justified in the large-format painting in which Wilhelm Thöny takes us into the world of fine art and allegory. Provenance: Galerie Welz, Salzburg; At the Paris Universal Exhibition in autumn 1937 ThOny was awarded a gold medal by the international jury as artist exhibiting in the Austrian section, as well as a certificate of honour for his large-size oil painting of Cardinal Verdier, the Archbishop of Paris, which aroused a lot of admiration in numerous exhibitions until it was destroyed in a large fire in New York in 1948 Judging from reprodcutions and two small-scale oil studies, the painting did not concentrate on the facial features of the sitter, but on the splendour and symbolic character of a dignitary of the Roman Catholic church' On March 4th, 1948 the painter suffered a terrible blow when a fire was raging in Brown's warehouse, where many of his oil paintings and works on paper were stored. The fire and the water used to extinguish it destroyed or damaged some thousand works, including numerous masterpieces, such as the famous portrait of Cardinal Verdier and significant landscapes and views of towns.
