    • Thornhill (Sir James) Portrait group of two architects and young boy, possibly Sir Christopher Wren and family, pen and ink, [c.1715]
      Nov. 26, 2024

Thornhill (Sir James) Portrait group of two architects and young boy, possibly Sir Christopher Wren and family, pen and ink, [c.1715]

      Est: £3,000 - £4,000

Thornhill (Sir James, 1675-1734) Portrait group of two architects and young boy, possibly Sir Christopher Wren and family, pen and brown ink, brown wash, red chalk, partial ink and chalk borderline, on laid paper without watermark, image 140 x 184 mm (5 1/4 x 7 1/4 in), sheet 185 x 232 mm (7 1/4 x 9 1/8 in), laid onto paper support, some handling creases, minor surface dirt, framed, [circa 1715] Provenance: Collection of John and Eileen Harris  *** There are a number of similar drawings by Sir James Thornhill held in institutional collections that compare very closely with the present sheet, including 'Design for a portrait of an architect or a painter' [Yale Center for British Art, Paul Mellon Collection, acc. no. B1975.4.955], and 'Portrait of a Geographer, Wife, and Child' [Art Institute Chicago, acc. no. 1922.1604]. The Leonora Hall Gurley Memorial Collection, Art Institute Chicago, also holds a number of other single figure portrait studies in ink by Thornhill, which all appear to uphold the attribution. The most likely architect would be Sir Christopher Wren (1632-1723), his son Christopher Jnr (1675-1747), aged 39, and his grandson (another Christopher) who was born in 1711. The globe in the background could relate to the portrait of Sir Christopher Wren in the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford, begun by Antonio Verrio before 1707 and completed by Sir Godfrey Kneller and Thornhill. Thornhill got the commission to decorate the dome of St Paul’s in 1714, which might provide an approximate date for this drawing if it does depict the Wrens. We are grateful to Charles Hind for his assistance in cataloguing the present drawing, and for his identification of the sitters.

      Est: £2,000 - £3,000

Sir James Thornhill (1675-1734) Great Parlour-door, Pan & Syrinx; Bed Chamber door Nept[une] & Iphimedia Two drawings, pencil and grey wash, ruled brown ink border, ink inscriptions and measurements in borders, sheets 197 x 140 mm (7 3/4 x 5 1/2 in) and 170 x 110 mm (6 3/4 x 4 1/4 in), tipped onto paper supports with old ink attributions to Thornhill in the lower centre, surface dirt, some marginal staining, the first mentioned with small nick in the upper right corner (unframed) (2) Provenance: Christopher Mendez, London ⁂ Two original drawings for overdoor paintings from an unknown commission, both depicting stories from Ovid's Metamorphoses. Croft-Murray does not appear to record a house with these subjects, so presumably for an unrealised project. Another pair of drawings by Thornhill for the same project are held in the Victoria & Albert Museum [see acc. D.3-1891]

SIR JAMES THORNHILL (1675-1734) Mythological study for a painted ceiling, pen, ink and wash, 10.5" x 8.5" Sir James Thornhill has many connections to the county of Dorset. Born in Melcombe Regis, he later moved to London where he completed an apprenticeship with Thomas Highmore, specialising in decorative, historical painting. His interior masterpieces include the Painted Hall at Greenwich Hospital, the cupola of St. Paul's cathedral and more locally, St. Marys Church, Weymouth, where he painted the reredos with the Last Supper. Though this example is mythological in its subject, the method of composition is directly comparable to the Weymouth example. In 1725, Thornhill built Thornhill House, Stalbridge.

Phaeton petitioning Apollo, allegorical figures representing the signs of the zodiac beneath oil on canvas 30 x 27 in. (76.2 x 68.6 cm.) PROVENANCE Lord Somers, Eastnor Castle, Hertfordshire and by descent to Hon. Mrs. Hervey-Bathurst. F.A. Drey, 1971. NOTES This sketch is believed to be a modello for Thornhill's reworking of the principal staircase ceiling at Wollaton Hall, Nottinghamshire. The original staircase ceiling, painted by Louis Laguerre circa 1699, represented the 'Assembly of the Gods'. This ceiling was later modified by Thornhill with the additional scene of 'Prometheus stealing fire from the Gods'. Thornhill was also responsible for the main decoration on the walls which showed, 'Prometheus bringing fire to men', 'The Sacrifice of Mercury and Argus', with subsidiary overdoor decoration illustrating the story of 'Mercury and Argus'. For discussion see E. Croft-Murray, Decorative Painting in England: 1537-1837, p. 1962, p. 254, no. 28 and p. 274, no. 46. It is possible that this sketch is a preliminary reworking of other aspects of Laguerre's original theme, Apollo sits upon clouds in the centre, with the other gods about him and the symbols of the zodiac beneath, as his son, Phaeton, asks to drive the sun-god's chariot for a day. Phaeton's reckless attempt to drive his father's chariot made him the symbol of all who aspire to that which lies beyond his capabilities and was a popular subject in Renaissance and Baroque painting. The subject of Apollo granting Phaeton leave to drive the chariot of the sun had most famously been painted by Laguerre on the ceiling of the Music Room at Chatsworth, circa 1689-94. The present sketch relates closely to a slightly smaller variant sold through these rooms on 12 July 1990 (lot 76). Wollaton Hall was built in 1580-8, probably by Robert Smythson, for Sir Francis Willoughby, 1st Lord Middleton, a mining magnate. It is probable that Sir Thomas Willoughby, 2nd Bt., later 1st Lord Middleton, commissioned the staircase and ceiling. Sketches for the reworking of the ceiling of the principal staircase are in the British Museum. We are grateful to Brian Tuppen for his help with this catalogue entry.
