Thumann studierte seit 1855 an der Akademie in Berlin, lernte im Atelier von Julius Hübner in Dresden sowie an der Großherzoglich-Sächsischen Kunstschule in Weimar bei Ferdinand Pauwels. 1866 wurde er Professor in Weimar, 1875-1887 wirkte Thumann als Professor an der Kunstakademie in Berlin.     nach Paul Thumann Rechteckige Bildplatte mit Darstellung der Psyche, an felsigem Ufer kniend und ihr Spiegelbild im Wasser betrachtend. Nach einem Gemälde von Friedrich Paul Thumann (1834 - 1908). Äußerst feine polychrome Malerei. Eingepresste Zepter- und KPM-Marke. Rücks. bez. sowie Klebeetikett mit Inv.-Nr.; Aufwändig gestalteter und vergoldeter Historismus-Stuckrahmen, verziert mit feinem, reliefplastischem Blüten- und Blattdekor sowie verschiedenen Ornamentbordüren. Platte 25 cm x 19 cm. 50,5 cm x 45,5 cm. Der Genre-, Historien- und Bildnismaler Friedrich Paul Thumann besuchte ab 1855 die Preußische Akademie der Künste in Berlin und ging dann bis 1860 in das Atelier des deutschen Malers Julius Hübner in Dresden. Sein 1863 begonnenes Studium bei Ferdinand Pauwels an der Großherzoglich-Sächsischen Kunstschule in Weimar, schloss er 1866 ab und unterrichtete dort bis 1870. Thumann ist vor allem durch seine Illustrationen bekannt. Er illustrierte u. a. “Amor und Psyche” von Robert Hamerling, Shakespeares “Sommernachtstraum” und Heinrich Heines “Buch der Lieder”. Vgl. Scarce 4.25 x 6.5 cabinet photo of Thurman's work entitled 'Psyche am Wasserspiegel,' signed below the image in black ink, and signed again on the reverse, adding a German sentiment and date of Berlin, December 13, 1894. Published by Franz Hanfstaengl Kunstverlag of Munich. In fine condition, with trivial chips to corners and a tiny pin hole to the top edge. This is the first Thumann autograph we have ever offered.

He studied under Professor Dr Hubner in Dresden at the Berlin Art Academy and with Professor Pauwels at the Ecole d'Art in Weimar. Thumann later became Professor of Art at the Ecole d'Art in 1866. In 1880 he was elected a Member of the Berlin Academy. His patron Ernst Keil was the founder of the magazine "Die Gartenlaube".
