    Lot of four original WWI American posters, including 'War Rages in France- We Must Feed Them' artwork by Harry Everett Townsend (1879-1941), poster No. 19 from the United States Food Administration, 1917, 2.5 x 3 inches section of loss at the top, and 'don't waste food while others starve!' artwork by L.C. Clinker and M.J. Dwyer, poster No. 31 from the United States Food Administration. Folds, some tearing around the margins, and some splits in tears. Also includes two 'Window Display Suggestions On Food Conservation' issued by the State Merchant Representative for Massachusetts, U.S. Food Administration. Larger posters approx. 20 x 30 inches each.

Murray, Winston-Salem, North Carolina Provenance: A copy of a letter of authentication from Walt Reid, Illustration House, Westport, Connecticut, accompanies the lot and reads as follows: This is to certify that that the above painting, an oil sketch on canvas of a girl reading on a sofa, 14" x 14" [illustrated on the letterhead], although not signed, is known by me to be a work of Harry Everett Townsend (1879-1941). A short biography of the artist and an example of his work is included on page 71 in my book "The Illustrator in America 1900-1960's published by Reinhold in 1966. Good condition, good appearance, minor paint loss in the couch area, no apparent restoration when examined with a black light

On back of stretcher is a clipped artist signature and accompanying is a signed typed letter from Walt Reed of Illustration House dated 1980 verifying the work as being done by Harry Everett Townsend.
