THE PROPERTY OF A GENTLEMAN HAARLEM, THE GROOTE MARKT LOOKING TOWARDS THE CHURCH OF SAINT BAVO measurements note 47 by 58.5 cm.; 18 1/2 by 23 in. oil on panel PROVENANCE Presumably Vincent van der Vinne (1731-1811) younger son of Jan Laurensz. van der Vinne; His Sale, Haarlem, 11 March 1816, lot 75, as 'J. van der Vinne, Haarlem Market Place seen towards the Grote Kerk' (with a pendant, lot 76, as Haarlem Market Place seen towards the Town Hall); With Frost & Reed, 1948; Mrs M. E. Jeacock, by whom sold, London, Christie's, 12 December 1986, lot 56, for £25,000, where acquired by the present owner. NOTE Van der Vinne, the first of a dynasty of Haarlem artists (se Provenance), was a prolific landscape draughtsman, but few paintings by him survive. His architectural paintings are very much influenced by those of his townsman Gerrit Berckheyde. The present painting was originally one of a pair, its pendant depicting The Town Hall and Market Place in Haarlem, was offered New York, Sotheby's, 12 January 1989, lot 120. Together, the paintings form Van der Vinne's only known townscapes. They were sold as a pair in Haarlem in 1816 and were last recorded together with Frost and Reed in 1948.
