In October of that year, he was awarded the prize. Subsequently, on February 6 1885, Van Looy departed for Italy and Spain with his painting materials, where he would travel for two years. Jacobus van Looy (1855-1930) A water carrier in Tangier pencil and pastel on paper, 24,5x27 cm Provenance: -From the collection of family of the artist. From a very young age, the painter/writer, Jacobus van Looy, one of the members of a radical and influential group known as the ‘Tachtigers’, or ‘Movement of Eighty’, travelled profusely, both in his homeland and abroad. At just 29 years of age he won the coveted Prix de Rome. This allowed him the privilege of being able to travel through Italy and Spain for a good two years. He travelled to Morocco for the first time in 1886, where he was totally overwhelmed by all the different impressions he got just walking through the streets. When he returned for a second time in 1902, he arrived more prepared. As well as paper, charcoal and a pencil, he took along chalk, crayons, water paints and oil paints. He mainly stayed in and around Tangiers and he made dozens of sketches – his appetite for work was huge. He painted Orientals, beggars, children, cityscapes. Jacobus found a new motif in the water carriers of Tangier. He dedicated a whole series of drawings and pastels to them. These are some of the best works that he produced in Morocco. The water carrier offered in auction now would have been drawn during this second stay. The work has always been kept in the family, passed on from one generation to the next. Please compare to this work to a similar water carrier in Tangier on the cover of the book by Esther Scheepers . Source: E. Scheepers, Chr. Will, ‘Looy met den noorderzon, weg!! De reizen van Jacobus van Looy’, Zutphen 1998. signed 'Jac. v. Looy' (lower right)
