Oil on panel. Marten van Valckenborch was a leading Flemish Renaissance artist who worked in the second half of the 16th century. Il débute sa carrière à Malines puis à Anvers qu'il quitte en 1572 suite aux persécutions religieuses. Il émigre à Aix-la-Chapelle et plus tard s'installe dans la tolérante ville impériale allemande de Francfort-sur-le-Main où le rejoint son frère Lucas. Ils y tiennent un atelier florissant. La formule du paysage panoramique héritée de Pieter Brueghel l'Ancien qui conjugue les perspectives linéaires et aériennes est typique de Marten van Valckenborch qui traite les particularités topographiques avec un soin méticuleux. Ce paysage boisé aux arbres feuillus et aux troncs tourmentés animés d'herbes arborescentes s'ouvre à gauche sur une rivière dominée par une ville juchée sur un éperon rocheux. Ce type de composition ainsi que la palette sobre et sourde sont typiques de l'art de Marten van Valckenborch. La suggestion de la profondeur rythmée par la distribution de la lumière et des nuances tonales annonce les grands paysages atmosphériques du XVIIe siècle.

Diese Flusslandschaft identifiziert Prof. Alexander Wied als ein charakteristisches Gemälde Marten van Valckenborchs aus der beginnenden Spätphase des Künstlers und datiert sie in die 1590er Jahre. Der Bildaufbau ist dabei typisch für das 16. Jahrhundert mit diagonal abfallender Vordergrundkulisse, einem weiten Ausblick in ein Flusstal und einem bildbegrenzenden Baum. Sie zählt zu den Jahreszeitenbilder mit reicher Detailwiedergabe und die hier gezeigten einzelnen Handlungen weisen darauf hin, dass es sich hierbei um eine Darstellung des Herbstes handelt: Die Weinlese zur Linken im Vordergrund, die Obsternte im Mittelgrund links, in der Mitte das Einmaischen der Trauben in Bottichen, und rechts zwei Hirten, die ihr Vieh in den Eichenwald zur Mast getrieben haben. In der Eiche rechts sitzt ein kleines Eichhörnchen, das an einer Eichel knabbert. Wied weißt darauf hin, dass die botanisch genaue Wiedergabe von gefärbtem Blattwerk in der Eiche einen Seltenheitswert im 16. Jahrhundert dargestellt haben dürfte. Zwei verschollene Jahreszeitenbilder, beide zuletzt 1917 bei C. F. Roos, Amsterdam, versteigert, sind stilistisch mit dieser hier angebotenen sehr verwandt und in den Massen fast identisch (Wied, 1990, Kat. Nr. 27 und 28 mit Abb.). Die Weinleseszenen in Kat. Nr. 27 stimmen mit dem hier besprochenen weitgehend überein, lediglich die Eichelmast fehlt. Auf Grund der seit der flämischen Buchmalerei als charakteristisch kanonisierten Tätigkeiten der Jahreszeit Herbst, die im Bild deutlich hervorgehoben werden (wie Obsternte für September, Weinlese für September/Oktober und Eichelmast für November), ist das Bild als Darstellung des Herbstes definiert und war vermutlich Teil einer Jahreszeiten-Serie.

NOTES When the present panel last appeared in these Rooms in 1936, it did so in the company of three other pictures comprising a series of the Four Seasons. The set was subsequently dispersed by Pieter de Boer who sold the Winter panel to a collector in Stockholm (Wied, op. cit., no. 34; present whereabouts unknown), and the Summer and Autumn to A.H. van Heek in Enschede, ( ibid., nos. 32 and 33). These three panels are all dated 1600, placing the series towards the end of the artist's career, when he and his brother, Lukas, were running a flourishing workshop in Frankfurt. As is appropriate to the season, the present picture has strong amorous connotations. The elegantly dressed men in the foreground are overcome by wine, music and feminine beauty and their courtship is no doubt referred to by the cultivated palace garden or 'Garden of Love' alongside.
