      NICOLAES VAN VERENDAEL

      Est: CHF70,000 - CHF100,000

NICOLAES VAN VERENDAEL (1640 Antwerp 1691) Bouquet of flowers in a glass vase with butterfly, caterpillar and snail. Oil on copper. 41.5 × 31.5 cm. Provenance: - With Leggatt Brothers, London. - European private collection. This outstanding painting by Nicolaes van Verendael is of an exceptional and brilliant quality. It shows a sumptuous bouquet of colourful flowers in a stone alcove. The detailed depiction of the different flower species allows them to be identified. A carnation, some pink roses, a peony and several blue bindweed plants, probably painted using precious lapis lazuli, are clearly recognisable. All were highly prized flower species that were collected and traded in Flanders and the Netherlands at the time. The small format of the artwork allows the art enthusiast to hold it in their hands and look closely at the finely painted detail, such as the structure of the petals or the butterfly wings. Many of the plants are depicted in various stages of flowering, from the buds bursting open, to flowers in full bloom, to wilted petals, creating a link between the different stages of life and death, a common theme in 17th century Dutch still life painting. The transparent vase, which allows a view of the flower stems, demonstrates Van Verendael's virtuoso hand, with this masterly rendering of the materiality of the glass. He has even incorporated the reflection of a window, which is located in the same room as the niche, as if the artist had a real bouquet of flowers before him that he is contemplating in his studio. However, this painting depicts flowers that do not bloom at the same time of year, thus confirming this to be an artistic composition with a lifelike depiction of elements from nature, which the Flemish painter has ennobled through his art. Nicolaes van Verendael was born in 1640 and is listed in the Guild of St Luke in Antwerp in the years 1656–57. He established his career in his native city of Antwerp, which was an important artistic centre for still life painters. The regular mention of paintings by Van Verendael in the Antwerp inventories testifies to his popularity during his lifetime. Dr Fred G. Meijer, who has confirmed the authenticity of this painting and whom we thank for his expertise, dates it to the first half of the 1670s. ------------------------------------------------- NICOLAES VAN VERENDAEL (1640 Antwerpen 1691) Blumenstrauss in einer Glasvase mit Schmetterling, Raupe und Schnecke. Öl auf Kupfer. 41,5 × 31,5 cm. Provenienz: - Kunsthandel, Leggatt Brothers, London.

      Est: €20,000 - €30,000

(Antwerp 1640–1691) A red and white tulip, roses, carnations, bindweeds, blackberries, an azalea, and other flowers in a glass vase together with butterflies and other insects, on a stone ledge, oil on canvas, 45 x 36.5 cm, framed We are grateful to Fred Meijer for confirming the attribution of the present painting on the basis of a photograph. He dates the work in the first half of the 1670s. The present work is a refined example of the highly popular floral still life that flourished in the seventeenth century Low Countries and remained popular in both the Dutch Republic and the Spanish Netherlands. On a stone ledge a small round vase is placed against a dark background. Amongst the colourful array of flowers, two pink roses and a red and white tulip stand out. At the time of the painting’s execution, the extraordinary high prices for the tulip bulbs, creating the first speculative bubble, better known as the ‘tulip mania’ had long passed. However, the flower remained highly sought after. Amidst the floral splendour, we see various insects flying or crawling amongst the flowers, referring to the lurking possible decay of the bouquet. There are no records of the Antwerp artist Nicolaes van Veerendael sojourning abroad or working in different European cities other than his birthplace. Trained by his father, Willem van Veerendael, Nicolaes joined the Guild of St Luke in 1657. Mostly known and appreciated for his flower still lifes, the artist painted allegorical scenes with monkeys in the style of Jan Brueghel I and David Teniers II as well. In his early career, Veerendael’s flower arrangements are smaller in size and represent elegantl flower bouquets in vases. Collaborating with artists such as Erasmus Quellinus and Jan Davidsz. De Heem, the latter in particular was especially influential in Veerendael’s later works. From 1670 onwards, insects and elements of vanities are included in the artist’s compositions, reminiscent of the works of De Heem. The present painting is a fine example of this development.

Meijer has confirmed the authenticity of these paintings by Nicolas van Verendael on the basis of a photograph and dates this pair of works to the 1680s. The floral motifs can be stylistically compared with the flower still-life featuring an antique bust in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp (Inv. No. 4628), which was created around 1689-90. The minimalised composition is a rarity in this artist's oeuvre.

Fred Meijer has kindly confirmed the attribution to Van Verendael (e?mail communication to the present owner, November 2015). In his opinion this work is a fragment, with the glass vase possibly added at a later stage (perhaps already in the early 18th Century). A comparable, characteristic work is for example a signed Cartouche decorated with flowerfestoons, of circa 1671?1675, in the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe; the handling of the flowers is very similar.

THE PROPERTY OF DAVID KOETSER GALLERY FLOWERS IN A VASE measurements note 29 3/4 by 24 3/4 in.; 75.5 by 63 cm. signed lower left on the ledge N.V. Verendael f. oil on canvas PROVENANCE Viscount Clifden, Lanhydrock, Bodmin, Cornwall; With Leonard Koetser, London, 1967; Private collection, Scotland, from whom purchased by David Koetser Gallery. NOTE Verendael's flower arrangements are among the most harmonious and life-like among the long and prolific tradition of still life painting that unfolded from the 16th century onwards. Verendael's works are difficult to date inasmuch as the artist remained faithful to the formulae he adopted early on in his career, including a preference for dark backgrounds, and his characteristic juxtaposition of red and pink. It is his white flowers, however, which have inspired some of the highest praise from scholars. For example, Peter Mitchell states "the petals are like the thinnest kind of tissue paper, finely crinkled, yet to employ the word paper is inadequate: a fine chiffon silk would be perhaps a fairer guide to the extraordinary fragile beauty of these whites" (see P. Mitchell, European Flower Painting, London 1973, p. 252). The finesse described by the author is perfectly exemplified in the present picture's three different varieties of white roses, which Verendael chose to place at the center of the composition, as if to suggest that they are the source of light the painting.

NICOLAES VAN VEERENDAEL ANTWERP 1640 - 1691 A STILL LIFE OF VARIEGATED TULIPS, A ROSE, CARNATION, AN IRIS AND OTHER FLOWERS IN A GLASS VASE, RESTING ON A STONE LEDGE DRAPED WITH A CLOTH, TOGETHER WITH A BUTTERFLY oil on canvas PROVENANCE The Earl of Plymouth; With Leonard Koetser Gallery, London, 1950 (Witt Library mount); Graham Baron Ash, Esq., Wingfield Castle, Diss, Norfolk; His sale ("Property removed from Wingfield Castle"), London, Christie's, 4 October 1967, lot 128, for 780 gns. to Leggatt's; With Leggatt Bros., London. EXHIBITED London, Royal Academy of Arts, Flemish Art 1300-1700, Winter Exhibition 1953-4, no. 341. LITERATURE AND REFERENCES Flemish Art 1300-1700, exhibition catalogue, London, Royal Academy of Arts, Winter Exhibition 1953-4, cat. no. 341, reproduced p. 60. CATALOGUE NOTE Veerendael was one of the most important flower painters active in Antwerp during the second half of the 17th Century. His paintings show a remarkable attention to detail and the artist was much admired for this even in his own day. Indeed the 18th-century biographer Weyerman wrote of Veerendael that it sometimes took him four days to finish painting a single flower (see De Levensbeschryvingen der Nederlandse Konstschilders en Konstschilderessen, vol. III, 1729, pp. 234-6). Here the highly naturalistic rendering of droplets in the foreground and reflection in the glass vase is remarkable for its verisimilitude. When the painting appeared at auction in 1967 another still life by Veerendael, of the same dimensions but on panel, signed and dated 1677, was sold as the subsequent lot (lot 129). Chronology of Veerendael's oeuvre is difficult to establish but a comparison between that picture and the present canvas would suggest that a dating in the second half of the 1670s for the present work seems reasonable. This is further substantiated by a comparison with another picture by Veerendael, also signed and dated 1677, belonging to the Winn family and on loan to Nostell Priory, National Trust (see G. Gordon, in Masterpieces from Yorkshire Houses. Yorkshire Families at Home and Abroad 1700-1850, exhibition catalogue, York, York City Art Gallery, 29 January - 20 March 1994, p. 104, cat. no. 66, reproduced). We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer for endorsing the attribution to Veerendael on the basis of a colour transparency.
