Frederick Horsman Varley Sold at Auction Prices

Figure painter, Painter, Water color painter, Porträtmaler, Landscape painter, b. 1881 - d. 1969

(b Sheffield, England, 1881; d Toronto, Canada 1969) Canadian Painter. Frederick Varley was a member of a prestigious group of Canadian landscape painters called the “Group of Seven” who toured around Canada in the 1920’s. Varley spent the first 31 years of his life in England. He studied painting at the Sheffield School of Art and in Belgium at the Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts. He married and began a family in Sheffield where he grew up; but in 1912 his friend Arthur Lismer convinced him to move to Canada. In Ontario, Varley got a job at the design firm Grip Ltd. where he met the other members of what would become the Group of Seven. Their work was mostly inspired by the Canadian landscape, though Varley also worked in portraiture. Varley participated in the First World War as an official “overseas artist,” painting scenes of the battlefield; he was profoundly affected and disturbed by the experience. After the war Varley and the group of seven reunited but in 1931 went their separate ways. Varley continued to paint and teach.

        Est: $300 - $500

VARLEY, Frederick Horsman (Canadian, 1881-1969) Coffee House Corner-Whitby. ca.1920. Watercolor on wove paper. Sheet: 6 ¾ x 11 ¾ ”. Frame: 10 ¾ x 16 ¾”. Signed and titled lower right. Varley saw art as a spiritual vocation. His interest in the figure as well as landscape set him apart from other members of the Group of Seven, of which he was a founding member (1920). One of Varley's most famous works is Stormy Weather, Georgian Bay (1921), painted after a summer at Georgian Bay. In 1926 he moved to Vancouver to teach at the recently established Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Arts, and for the first time landscape painting, in oil and watercolor, became his principal interest. His attraction to Asian philosophies and Chinese painting and color symbolism characterizes his paintings from this period. The locale of this painting is Whitby, a seaside town in North Yorkshire, England. This scene at the harbor was and still is a popular visual for artists and photographers. Light surface dirt. Paper toned. Adhered to board. Good condition.

He studied art in Sheffield and attended Académie royale des Beaux-Arts in Antwerp, Belgium, where he worked on the docks. He immigrated to Canada in 1912 on the advice of another Sheffield native (and future Group of Seven member), Arthur Lismer, and found work at the Grip Ltd. design firm in Toronto, Ontario.Beginning in January 1918, he served in the First World War with C.W. Simpson, J.W. Beatty and Maurice Cullen. Varley came to the attention of Lord Beaverbrook, who arranged for him to be commissioned as an "official war artist." He accompanied Canadian troops in the Hundred Days offensive from Amiens, France to Mons, Belgium. His paintings of combat are based on his experiences at the front. Although he had been enthusiastic to travel to France as a war artist, he became deeply disturbed by what he saw:"We’d be healthier to forget [the war], and that we never can. MacDonald)、阿瑟·利斯麦尔(Arthur Lismer)、弗雷德里克·霍斯曼·瓦利(Frederick Horsman Varley)、弗朗西斯·约翰斯顿(Frank Johnston)、富兰克林·卡尔米歇尔(Franklin Carmichael)和亚历山大·扬·杰克逊(A.Y. Jackson)七位艺术家组成,后续陆续有更多艺术家加入。

Varley’s (1881-1969) contribution to Canadian art has normally been credited to his work in portraiture and the figure, but his landscapes also signal his great talent. Sumach, viewed perfunctorily may seem simple enough but it is a formidable expression of the artist’s pictorial strength and competency in watercolour. Against sparse coats of contrasting soft blue and brownish-orange paint, small, nearly imperceptible forms of nature emerge. It is in the merging of this colour-restricted palette, with accented dabs of sumach plants dotted across the picture surface, where the landscape slowly reveals itself.Estimate: $6,000–8,000

Varley, Key Porter Books, Toronto, 1983, page 75.Note:Called westward for a job at the Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Arts in 1926, Varley found his new surroundings a rich source of inspiration. The glacier lakes, coastal mountains, rugged terrain and assortment of vegetation would feature heavily in a number of his works. The Lonesome Tree makes a simplified statement in which Varley effortlessly harmonizes his graphite lines with select hues of watercolour – greens, blues, the reddish brown of the deeply grooved bark. As Peter Varley affirms, the artist had the ability to “capture the essence of a mood or character with a few lines or coloured washes…”

Unsure of the direction his art would take, Varley soon found inspiration in the landscape of British Columbia. Varley was energized by the vast scale of the landscape, the mountains, the ocean and the climate, and embarked on sketching trips, painting the mountains in forms that were almost abstract. Interested in colour symbolism, Varley developed a comprehensive colour theory which he used as a starting point to impart a particular mood to a painting. He favoured a restricted palette of blue-greens and violet (he considered green to be spiritual and pale violet to be aesthetic) which he applied to canvases such as Coast Mountain Forms of circa 1929 (collection of the National Gallery of Canada), constructed almost entirely of blues and violets.Varley remained in B.C. until 1936, and, except for a visit in 1937, did not return until 1957. That year, he made the first of several sketching trips to the Kootenay Lake region in the company of his close companion, Kathleen McKay.Although Varley has used the same palette of blue-green and violet of the earlier B.C. works, he seems less interested in giving expression to the spiritual in nature’s forms and colours than to the effects of light. It has been suggested that Varley is indebted to to J.M.W. Turner in his use of sunlight to illuminate elements in the landscape. Here, the play of light on the water below can be seen through the branches of the foreground trees. The composition harkens back to the iconic landscapes of Georgian Bay where a solitary tree stands silhouetted against the water and sky (Squally Weather, Georgian Bay, 1920, collection of the National Gallery of Canada).

Varley: Portraits into the Light / Mise en lumière des portraits, 2007, page 103 Provenance:Roberts Gallery, Toronto Private Collection, Vancouver Island Frederick Varley's skill with colour enabled him to command a brilliantly saturated palette, work with unusual combinations of complementary tones and to infuse his warm colours with gold. Not one to take his colour cues from what he saw, he instead sought to give his work the essence of the emotional charge he felt when painting. In this lively, bright depiction of Kootenay Lake, Varley has used a preponderance of white, lightening all his colours to their palest, most silvery hues. It is a work of blinding light, with a unique Varley-esque force conveyed through subtle blends and fine colour harmonies. Katerina Atanassova writes, "Varley insisted on seeing the true nature of colour, searching out the exact value and hue instead of resorting to formulas. In that respect he had a less structured approach than the academic painters, who used to lay colours over carefully executed drawings. Once he had defined the largest areas of colour, he made sure that the colours worked together. He never viewed colours separately, because his goal was always a harmonious blend."
