        Est: $2,000 - $4,000

Jean Joseph Vaudechamp (French, 1790-1866; active New Orleans 1831-1839) "Portrait d'Homme", 1827 oil on canvas signed and dated upper right. Period gilt frame. 25-1/2" x 21-1/4", framed 32" x 28" Provenance: Private collection, France. Notes: While studying at Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Jean Joseph Vaudechamp apprenticed in the studio of Anne-Louis Girodet. An accomplished artist, Girodet was a student of the renowned Neoclassical painter Jacques-Louis David. Favoring portraiture, Vaudechamp's paintings reflect his talents at refined draftsmanship and capturing the sophistication of his sitters. In 1832, Vaudechamp began to make annual trips for over a decade to New Orleans where his portraits were highly regarded and came to define the prosperous merchants and planters of French descent. Dated 1827, "Portrait d'Homme" was painted while Vaudechamp was still in France and is among his earliest portrait works. The skillfully rendered portrait reflects the elements that would become representative of Vaudechamp's work in Louisiana including the elegantly dressed sitter depicted in a bust-length view. Interestingly, Vaudechamp employed a simple olive brown background here that he would favor in his later Louisiana portraits.

        Est: $6,000 - $8,000

Jean Joseph Vaudechamp (French/Louisiana, 1790-1866), "Young Boy Leaning on Table with Bookplate", oil on canvas, unsigned, 44 in. x 33 3/4 in., framed. Note: Before Jean Joseph Vaudechamp traveled to New Orleans, he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under Anne-Louis Girodet (1767-1824) and established himself as a portrait painter in Paris. Vaudechamp soon made a name for himself depicting wealthy, fashionable citizens of Paris, and in 1831, he traveled to New Orleans, where portraitists were highly sought within the Creole community. In his monograph on the artist, William Keyse Rudolph notes that: “By 1833, Vaudechamp’s style had crystallized. For the remainder of his time in New Orleans, he rarely experimented with more complex compositions…exceptions to the rule, like a series of portraits of the Forstall and Freret families, are just as revealing as the more traditional works.” In the portrait of a young boy offered here, Vaudechamp employed a neutral background, yet deviated from his traditional compositional pose for his sitters by adding layers of additional complexity. The standing boy leans his arm on a table, perhaps the same table seen in Vaudechamp’s portrait of James P. Freret and his son William P. Freret, and he rests his hand on a black and white bookplate. A similar bookplate device can be found in several of Vaudechamp’s portraits of children, such as the one of Mathilde Freret and Eugénie Freret from 1837 and the group portrait of the Forstall children of 1836. The young boy’s formal attire and the lavish dimensions of the portrait indicate the wealth of his family. According to family lore, this lot and the following lot of a Louisiana gentleman descended in the Bouchereau side of the family of Confederate general John C. Pemberton (1814-1881) and hung for many years in the family apartment in the Pontalba Buildings. Ref.: Rudolph, William K. Vaudechamp in New Orleans. Jean Joseph Vaudechamp (French, 1790-1866) "Portrait of a Young Woman"

        Est: $20,000 - $40,000

Jean Joseph Vaudechamp (French, 1790-1866; Active New Orleans 1831-1839) "Portrait of a Young Woman, Partially Draped" oil on canvas signed and dated "Vaudechamp 1844". Framed. 36-3/4" x 29", framed 45" x 38" Notes: This portrayal of a partially nude woman with her self-assured gaze is a rare glimpse into Jean Joseph Vaudechamp's later career, painted two years before his only other known nude, "Portrait of a Young Girl, Partially Clothed". Both paintings reveal Vaudechamp's masterful modeling of the human form, his elegant composition, and use of soft light dappling the sitter's body. A French, academically trained artist and a pupil of the famous Anne-Louis Girodet-Trioson, Vaudechamp became the most sought-after portraitist in New Orleans during the 1830s, where he spent his winters painting members of the prominent Creole families. His success in New Orleans appears to have provided him with financial security, and although he continued to exhibit at the Salon, this brought him little critical acclaim. The two nudes are a departure from his usual subject matter; suggesting that perhaps he was experimenting with different genres in his later years. This evocative portrait is the first nude by the artist to have been offered for sale outside of Paris. Jean Joseph Vaudechamp (French/Louisiana, 1797)

        Est: $5,000 - $7,000

Jean Joseph Vaudechamp (French/Louisiana, 1790-1866) , "Portrait of Charles Jules Colheux de Longpré Fitzgerald (1823-1882) at 9 years old", 1832, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right, "Turquin, Paris" label and labels with title and sitter information on stretcher, 25 3/4 in. x 21 1/2 in., framed. Note: Charles Jules Colheux de Longpré-Fitzgerald was born in New Orleans in 1823. His parents, Jean Baptiste Pierre Aimé Colheux Longpré (1775-c.1841) and Victoire Adèle Françoise Fitzgerald (1797-1832), were both French colonists in Saint-Domingue (Haiti). Like many planters, they fled to New Orleans during the Haitian Revolution in 1804. In 2014, a rare manuscript copy of the Haitian Declaration of Independence, one of only a few in existence, was found among Jean-Baptiste’s papers in France and is now housed in the collection of the Rubenstein Library at Duke University. After leaving Haiti and settling in New Orleans, Jean Baptiste and Victoire married in 1813 and welcomed their first child, daughter “Victoire” Ernestine Colheux de Longpré-Fitzgerald, in 1820. Charles Jules, depicted in the portrait offered here, was born three years later. To support his family, Jean Baptiste engaged in real estate speculation, primarily in the Faubourg Marigny and later lower Garden District, and he also owned a successful import and export business. Jean Joseph Vaudechamp’s first season in New Orleans as a portraitist coincided with the commission of this work. He painted a number of New Orleans’ prominent citizens during those first months and demonstrated a refined Neoclassical style of portraiture that, as William Keyse Rudolph wrote, set him apart from American artists. Vaudechamp became much in demand with city merchants and plantation owners along the Mississippi River. The compositional device of depicting the sitter looking out from a window frame in this portrait is perhaps an early experimentation on the part of the artist, as it is a presentation found in only one of his other attributed works. The cropping of the fictional window also hints at the possibility of a now unknown companion piece, perhaps depicting Charles Jules’ sister Victoire, in a matching window frame. Jean Joseph Vaudechamp (French/Louisiana, 1790)

        Est: $12,000 - $18,000

Jean Joseph Vaudechamp (French/Louisiana, 1790-1866) , "Portrait of Charles Victor Foulon, Notary (1805-1892)", 1834, oil on canvas, signed and dated upper right, 28 3/4 in. x 23 1/2 in., framed. Note: Jean-Joseph Vaudechamp, one of the premier portrait painters in early 19th century New Orleans, painted the prominent Creole families of the city between 1831 and 1839. Charles Victor Foulon (1805-1892), a native Frenchman who became an American citizen in 1829, was a notary in the city of New Orleans, where he lived on the corner of Orleans Avenue and Rampart Street with his wife, Marthe Eugenie Grandchamps, and their children, Alice, Eugene, Louise, and Emma. With connections to some of the most prestigious families in the city, it is no wonder Foulon had his portrait painted by Vaudechamp. Many important documents survive which were notarized by Foulon. His father-in-law, François Julien Grandchamps, was a prominent New Orleans pharmacist associated with Dr. Yves Lemonnier, whose portrait was painted by Louis Antoine Collas (French, 1775-1856, active New Orleans 1822-1829). Dr. Lemonnier, a New Orleans physician, owned the now famous "first skyscraper" of New Orleans, the three-story Maison Lemonnier at 640 Royal Street in the French Quarter. François Grandchamps' Pharmacy was located nearby at 501 Royal Street, and the painter John Vanderlyn rented the rooms above the pharmacy for his studio. This is an exceptionally debonair portrait of Mr. Foulon with his upswept coiffure and distinctive mustache and beard. Dressed in his finest garments, Foulon’s gaze meets the viewer’s in a proud and dignified manner. Documented Vaudechamp paintings such as this, with ancestral provenance and presented in the original frame, are rare to come to the market and provide a fascinating look into the history of New Orleans. Hortaire Joseph Guenard (American/New Orleans, 1827-1899) "Portrait of Marie-Joseph Guenard, Madame Domingo de Fleitas" oil on canvas after Jean Joseph Vaudechamp (French, 1790-1866, active New Orleans, 1831-1839), signed and inscribed "After Vaudechamp" upper left. Giltwood frame. 32" x 26", framed 38-1/2" x 32-1/4" Provenance: Ex-collection William E. Groves, New Orleans, Louisiana. Literature: Louisiana Painters and Paintings from the Collection of W. E. Notes: In 1834, Jean Joseph Vaudechamp painted two identical portraits of "Marie-Joseph Guenard, Madame Domingo de Fleitas." Both portraits were eventually donated by family members to museums. One portrait is in the collection of Musee du Nouveau Monde, La Rochelle, France and the other is in The Historic New Orleans Collection. Evidently a member of the family commissioned Hortaire J. Guenard to paint a third portrait. Guenard appropriately inscribed the portrait as being "After Vaudechamp."

Jean-Joseph Vaudechamp (1790-1864) in France and Louisiana. Bryn Mawr College Doctor of Philosophy Thesis, 2003, p. 407. Note: Jean Joseph Vaudechamp rarely painted nudes, with only two known to exist today. In the portrait of a young woman offered here, he comes close by revealing an expansive décolletage behind a sheer shift dress cinched at the waist. The draped shawl, gently falling off of the woman’s shoulders, adds to the allure of the portrait, which exhibits no jewelry but a highly fashionable Apollo knot hairstyle. The painting in its original form most likely included the young woman’s nipples visible through the sheer fabric. An attempt at censorship in a previous conservation appears at some point over the past decades to have overtaken Vaudechamp’s original intent in creating a study of the female torso under sheer fabric. Nonetheless, one is compelled to appreciate the sensitive and delicate handling of the brushwork on the skin, hair, and fabric throughout the portrait, which exemplifies Vaudechamp’s impeccable technique.

Jean Joseph Vaudechamp (French, 1790-1866, act. New Orleans, 1831-1839), "Portrait of a Lady in a Fur Stole", 1828, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left, canvas stencil "Age. Ottoz, Eleve de Mr. Belot, Rue de la Michodiere, Paris, No. 2. A. Paris" and handwritten label "M. Gadon, 1 piece, 73 x 60, de vernis, rectoy (?) restauration vernis" en verso, 28 3/4 in. x 23 1/2 in., period frame. Note: Before Jean Joseph Vaudechamp traveled to New Orleans, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under Anne-Louis Girodet (1767-1824) and established himself as a portrait painter in Paris. Vaudechamp soon made a name for himself depicting wealthy, fashionable citizens of Paris, and in 1831, he traveled to New Orleans, where portraitists were highly sought within the Creole community. The lady depicted here wears a classic 1830s style dress with an off-the-shoulder neckline, gathered bodice, natural waist, and sheer, puffed sleeves. Her luxurious dress, fur stole, and gold jewelry indicate that she is a woman of the upper class. Vaudechamp applies his flawless technique to depict the woman’s porcelain skin, the various fabrics of the dress, and the short fur of the stole to create a sophisticated portrayal of a prominent French woman.

Jean-Joseph Vaudechamp (French, 1790-1866, act. Lefevre-Foinet" en verso, 32 in. x 25 1/2 in., period frame. Note: Likely one of Vaudechamp's earliest New Orleans canvases, the current lot portrays a dashing young man in fashionable attire. Known for painting many members of the wealthy and important families of New Orleans, Vaudechamp often went to his clients' homes in the city or their plantation properties to have family members sit for his portraits. The background in the current lot, with its low horizon, greenery, and stormy sky, is extremely similar to the portrait of William Charles Cole Claiborne II, painted in 1831. The Lefebvre-Foinet shop in Montparnasse was known as the premier supplier of artists’ materials in Paris. Jean Joseph Vaudechamp (French, 1790-1866, act. New Orleans, 1831-1839), "Portrait of a Lady in a Fur Stole", 1828, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left, canvas stencil "Age. Ottoz, Eleve de Mr. Belot, Rue de la Michodiere, Paris, No. 2. A. Paris" and handwritten label "M. Gadon, 1 piece, 73 x 60, de vernis, rectoy (?) restauration vernis" en verso, 28 3/4 in. x 23 1/2 in., period frame. Note: Before Jean Joseph Vaudechamp traveled to New Orleans, he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under Anne-Louis Girodet (1767-1824) and established himself as a portrait painter in Paris. Vaudechamp soon made a name for himself depicting wealthy, fashionable citizens of Paris and in 1831, he decided to travel to New Orleans, where portraitists were widely sought after in the Franco-American community. The lady depicted here wears a classic 1830s style dress with an off-the-shoulder neckline, gathered bodice, natural waist, and sheer, puffed sleeves. Her luxurious dress, fur stole, and gold jewelry indicate that she is a woman of the upper class. Vaudechamp applies his flawless technique to depict the woman’s porcelain skin, the different fabrics of the dress, and the short fur of the stole to create a sophisticated portrayal of a prominent French woman. One can clearly see how Vaudechamp subsequently became Louisiana’s most prominent portrait painter.

        Jean Joseph Vaudechamp (French, 1790-1866)

        Est: $5,000 - $8,000

Jean Joseph Vaudechamp (French, 1790-1866; Active New Orleans 1831-39), "Portrait of a Man and a Woman, Presumably Baroness Louise Deconchy Receiving Word of Her Husband's Death in Battle", oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left "Vaudechamp, 1823", 28-3/4" x 23", reverse label inscribed in pen and ink "Baronne Louise Deconchy, epouse du general d' Empire Vincent Martel Deconchy (1768-1823)". Presented in the period giltwood and gesso frame. This rare work is one of the earliest surviving paintings to have surfaced by Jean Joseph Vaudechamp, painted in France six years after he began exhibiting at the Paris Salon, one year before he married his second wife, one year before the death of his teacher, Anne-Louis Girodet-Trioson, and two years before his first (and only known) state commission. Vaudechamp very rarely painted multiple figures in the same composition, either in France or Louisiana. This canvas is presumably a portrait of Baroness Louise Deconchy, wife of General Vincent Martel Deconchy who died on a battlefield in Spain in 1823. This could perhaps be a mourning portrait of the Baroness and her son or secretary, with the classicized bust of the deceased general on a plinth behind the writing desk. The younger man is holding an official letter in his hand visibly inscribed at the top "MEE Espagne", again referring to the Franco-Spanish war. Regardless of the identity of the sitters, the portrait's composition is a sophisticated one for the 33-year-old artist, as the figures face each other tete-a-tete. Even in the handful of multi-figural compositions he would create in New Orleans, the painter usually preferred to have figures frontal, playing to the viewers. Vaudechamp's palette is brighter and slightly more acrid than the subdued one he would adopt in New Orleans after his 1832 arrival there. This work, like the Langres altarpiece and his later "Portrait of an Elegant Young Gentleman with Cane, presumed to be a Resident of New Orleans (Mr. Robley?)", reflects the artist's difficulty when presenting a figure at more than bust-length, witnessed in particular by the lady's lap and the extended leg. What he lacks in understanding of foreshortening, he more than makes up for in the handling of the face, fabric and details, seen in the design on the shawl draped over the chair. Jean Joseph Vaudechamp (French, 1790-1866; Active New Orleans 1831-39), "Portrait of a Young Woman, Partially Draped", signed and dated "Vaudechamp 1844", 36-3/4" x 29". Framed. This portrayal of a partially nude woman with her self-assured gaze, is a rare glimpse into Jean Joseph Vaudechamp's later career, painted two years before his only other known nude, "Portrait of a Young Girl, Partially Clothed". Both paintings reveal Vaudechamps' masterful modelling of the human form, his elegant composition, and use of soft light dappling the sitter's body. A French, academically trained artist and a pupil of the famous Anne-Louis Girodet-Trioson, Vaudechamp became the most sought-after portraitist in New Orleans during the 1830's, where he spent his winters painting members of the prominent Creole families. His success in New Orleans appears to have provided him with financial security, and although he continued to exhibit at the Salon, this brought him little critical acclaim. The two nudes are a departure from his usual subject matter; suggesting that perhaps he was experimenting with different genres in his later years. This evocative portrait is the first nude by the artist to have been offered for sale outside of Paris Reference: William Kayse Rudolph, Vaudechamp in New Orleans, The Historic New Orleans Collection, 2007.

Presented in its original giltwood exhibition frame. Note: Jean- Joseph Vaudechamp was born in Rambervillers, France on December 20, 1790. As outlined in the recently published book Vaudechamp in New Orleans by William Keyse Rudolph, Vaudechamp moved to Paris as a child and lived with his aunt and her husband, the well-known poet Jacques Delilles. With Delilles' influence, Vaudechamp won entry into the E'cole des Beaux-Arts and the studio of Anne-Louis Girodet-Trison. Records indicate that Vaudechamp thrived in Girodet's studio and exhibited his works at the Salon from 1819 to 1848. He was married twice and died in August 1864. According to the author, the record is incomplete. "Missing is an extraordinary chapter in the story of Vaudechamp's career - and the story of the New Orleans art scene". The year is 1832. "The city's economy is thriving, its boundaries and population expanding - local Creoles find themselves steadily losing cultural, political, legal, economic, and geographical dominance. The stage is set for the arrival of an artist whose work will captivate and help revitalize the city's Creole community." In the 1830's Vaudechamp would spend his winters in Louisiana, and soon became established as the region's leading portrait artist. He was considered "quite simply" the most educated artist to have worked in New Orleans. Jean-Joseph Vaudechamp remains one of New Orleans' most beloved and celebrated artists. His works are represented in the collections of the Louisiana State Museum; The New Orleans Museum of Art; The Musee du Louvre, Paris; The Musee d'Art et Histoire, Cholet, France; The Hermann-Grima House, New Orleans; The Historic New Orleans Collection; as well as many private collections to name a few. For further discussions of the extraordinary career of Jean-Joseph Vaudechamp, see Vaudechamp in New Orleans by William Keyse Rudolph, 2007.
