  • Ripolin. 1898.
    Nov. 14, 2021

    Ripolin. 1898.

    Est: $1,700 - $2,000

ARTIST: EUGÈNE VAVASSEUR (1863-1949) SIZE: 72 5/8 x 50 3/8 in./184.5 x 128 cm PRINTER: Imp. Emile Acker, Paris DESCRIPTION: Still a preferred name in the paint world, Ripolin lacquer undoubtedly owed its initial success to the advertised claims of its ability to cover any surface with a weather-resistant, porcelain-like brilliance. But one must not discount the contribution of Vavasseur’s three painting cronies that appear in this product’s inaugural 2-sheet design. “This is one of the most celebrated posters in French advertising, whose success was immediate and has never been refuted... [For] one century legend has stirred over the origin of the name. There remains one certainty, that the lacquer’s inventor was a Dutchman by the name of Diep. As for the word [Ripolin], there are two possible interpretations: the more rational one averts that ‘olin’ comes from olie—the Dutch word for oil; the other more romantic notion maintains that Riep’s wife was named Pauline... hence the two last syllables” (Collectionneur, p. 50). As a posterist, Vavasseur was well known for his invention of humorous characters such as these. He also contributed drawings to such periodicals as La Caricature, La Silhouette, and, under the pseudonym Ripp, to L’Eclipse, La Gaudriole, and La Revue Illustrée. (Art Nouveau)

This new model from Gillet Forest seems to have astounded this group of onlookers, but the mystery that most perplexes us is their choice of couture: their driving accessories have taken on a futuristic aesthetic, and the admiring woman in white seems to be wearing a makeshift space suit. Gillet Forest was founded in 1899 in Saint-Cloud, France; their first automobiles were steam powered, and from 1902 on, they built cars with combustion engines. The company ended production around 1908. (Art Nouveau; Automobiles)

    L'Eclair. ca. 1897.

    Est: $1,200 - $1,500

Artist: EUGENE VAVASSEUR (1863-1949) Size: 23 7/8 x 32 1/2 in./60.6 x 82.5 cm Imp. Chaix, Paris A woman bestrides the globe in this fascinating symbol of the Fin-de-Siècle. To English speakers, "eclair" recalls a pastry; for the French, "l'eclair" means light, and lightning. Lightning gave its name to this independent journal of politics, and in this promotion, l'Eclair allows you to see the writing on the wall, literally. The woman is transcribing directly from a telegraph machine, communicating the latest from Europe, Asia, Africa, America and Oceania: a declaration that "as she stands on the globe in the heart of France... [l'Eclair is] connected everywhere" (Fit to Print, p. 77). This image won 2nd prize in one of France's 'posters of the year' (Gold, p. 68), for its brilliant fusion of themes, current events, and branding. Coincidentally, "l'eclair" is now used as a term for "light year." (Literary; Art Nouveau)

"'L'Eclair' was an independent, politically oriented journal which devoted a lot of effort to advertising by means of posters and, in fact, held one of the the most hotly contested competitions for the best poster of the year" (Gold, p. 68). In fact, this image won second prize in one such competition. Frequently, the publication was inclined to call upon high-tech-for-the-time themes in their advertising and they do so "this time with the young lady transcribing the telegraph news directly onto the front page of the newspaper. As she stands on the globe in the heart of France, so here the circuitry under the telegraph indicates that she's connected everywhere" (Fit to Print, p. 77).

    EUGENE VAVASSEUR (1863-?) RIPOLIN. 1898.

    Est: $1,200 - $1,800

49 1/2x72 inches. Condition B: paper loss, repaired tears and creases along vertical and horizontal folds, some affecting image. Vavasseur was a prolific illustrator and poster designer who is only remembered today for this poster, which along with Bouisset's little girl for Meunier Chocolate and Michelin's Bibendum became part of French popular culture and a graphic icon of the era. For over fifty years the image of these three painters helped to make this brand universally known, and the impact of this poster was so ubiquitous that the brand name entered into French vocabulary; "ripoline," in French slang, means "well-painted"!
